Garnet is frustrated that her future vision does not reveal them capturing Peridot, unaware of Pearl's deception. The Crystal Gems depart for the hub again. The hub seems fixed and operational, and Pearl is eager to keep fusing with Garnet to make Sardonyx and to keep disabling the tower over and over again.

Season 1 Episode 32: Fusion Cuisine. Even with the mission statement of the show made clear so early on, Steven Universe makes many of its seemingly ‘filler’ episodes about exploring it. In this episode, Connie’s (Steven’s best friend) parents want to meet Steven’s parents.
Season 1 Episode 22 : Steven and the Stevens. With a plot that wouldn’t be out of place on Rick and Morty, this is one of the first instances where Steven Universe takes on a beloved sci-fi trope, time travel.
When Connie relates a bad experience she had at school earlier that day, Steven advises her how to deal with the bad thoughts, “Sometimes you just don’t think about it.”
Steven Universe plays the long game and this is one of the episodes where there’s some major payoff. A seemingly throw away scene from Steven’s first interaction with Peridot, leads to many of his human friends being kidnapped.
The lesson is fairly straightforward, Steven learns to stay true to himself, but this is not your typical ‘lesson of the week’ show. It starts off sweet and innocent, with Steven just wanting to go back in time so he can perform with his dad, and ends in Steven watching himself die (as the song goes in the episode).
He loses himself in them with Amet hyst, forgetting about his own son. When Greg finally snaps himself out of it, Amethyst is not pleased. She’s bitter that Greg would choose anyone over her, just like he chose Rose, Steven’s mom, years ago. Rose casts a huge (eyyyyyyy) shadow over the series and its characters.
Hey, did you know Steven Universe is a primarily artist driven show? Yes, the series has writers but the artists have a huge say in where it goes and boy… Does this episode ever put the artists at the forefront. It’s a gorgeous episode that takes on its own visual style, inspired by Sleeping Beauty and the work of Lotte Reinger. The whole thing reads as a metaphor for LGBTQ people discovering themselves and dealing with hatred and fear from society.
After a battle damages the Fish Stew Pizza sign, the Gems are banned from the restaurant, so Steven throws a cookout on the beachside to mend the relationship between the Pizza family and the Gems.
Steven uses his room in the temple to create a simulated image of Rose Quartz in order to try to experience what it would be like to know his mother. He ends up confronting her with his troubled feelings about her complex legacy and her choice to create him.
After escaping from the Diamonds, Steven and Lars encounter and befriend the "off-colors", a group of "defective" Gems who live in hiding from Gem society . Lars defends them from security robots but is critically injured in the process.
When TV broadcasts are disrupted by a video signal emitted by Peridot from a Gem communication tower, Garnet chooses to fuse with Pearl into Sardonyx to destroy it , which dismays Amethyst. As the tower keeps being fixed, however, Steven and Amethyst are shocked to discover who's really behind it.
Steven gets depressed when his favorite ice-cream sandwich brand, Cookie Cat, has been taken off the market. He soon cheers up when the Gems manage to get a hold of some of the last remaining Cookie Cats, which Steven believes may hold the key to activating his gem.
Steven tries to search for secret messages Rose may have left him about his "magical destiny". Lion eventually leads him to a tape —but it's just an alternate version of the message from Rose he's already seen.
Steven gets a hold of a magical time travel device and does what any kid would do - he uses it for comebacks . But toying with magic draws trouble to his sleepy beach town and Steven has to step up and save the day - with more comebacks .
Steven is all the more upset when he finds out the mission was a test, because in his eyes, he failed it! Pearl tries to comfort him some more but only makes it worse by saying that his test should have been much easier than it was, but the Spire was in much worse condition than the Gems had expected.
The test seems to take several cues from the Super Mario Bros. series, particularly in Garnet's section. The scene where the Gems congratulate Steven for completing the challenges is played eerily similar to the infamous television ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Steven realizes that the Gems aren't entirely confident that they're doing such a good job by him as teachers. Steven returns to the rooms, walks determinedly through them, and meets up with the Gems, who cheer him for having succeeded, until they see the barely contained expression he's wearing.
Advertisement: The first room is Amethyst's room. It's a temple designed to look like her open mouth and the road Steven walks is her tongue. A giant boulder rolls down after him and chases him to where the road ends abruptly in a cliff, leaving a wide gap between where he stands and the door out of the chamber!
Steven is even more upset by the idea that the test was supposed to be super easy and he still failed. He insistently asks for another test, and the Gems, realizing he won't let it be, oblige. They put together a dungeon for him, each room designed by one of them.
Steven and the Gems are playing "Citchen Calamity", one of the many board games in the Universe collection. Steven wins, and as he's going through the closet to find another game for them to play, he runs across the idol that he was supposed to have brought with him during their mission to the Lunar Sea Spire.
There is literally no way for Steven to fail. The Gems have given Steven another super-easy test after he said how upset he was at having failed a super easy test! Furious, Steven walks back up to the top of the dungeon, and climbs over Amethyst's boulder to the top of the structure, which is suspended in mid-air.
