Stan Beeman is a main character on the FX series, The Americans. He is the ex-husband of Sandra Beeman as well as the father of Matthew Beeman. He is an FBI counterintelligence agent who specializes in hunting down Soviet spies operating on American soil, working closely with FBI agents Frank Gaad and Dennis Aderholt and FBI secretary Martha Hanson . When his Soviet informant, Nina Krilova, was sent back to the Soviet Union for treason, he collaborated with Oleg Burov to attempt to save her in risky ways. From 1981 until December 1987, he has no idea that his neighbors and friends, Philip and Elizabeth Jennings, are the dangerous Soviet illegals that he has been chasing all along.
Later in the series finale, Aderholt shows Stan sketches of Philip and Elizabeth and apologizes to Stan for not believing him earlier. Stan then goes to Henry‘s hockey game where he tells Henry the truth about his parents, and agrees to look after him.
Gaad also informs Stan that Nina has been charged with espionage and treason. He tries again to reconcile with Sandra, trying to understand the EST program she's been going to, so he goes and asks Philip to go too. Stan finds the training ridiculous and useless, much to Sandra's annoyance.
Stan asks Nina to take a polygraph test if she wants to get exfiltrated. Arkady forces Stan's hand to steal the "Echo" program in exchange for Nina's safety. When Oleg pressures Stan more, Stan gives a surveillance log to Oleg and later promises to protect Nina.
Season Four. Stan confronts & accosts Philip Jennings in his garage & accuses him of having an affair his ex wife Sandra which Philip denies. Stan ends up apologizing to Philip for overreacting in a later episode. Stan is also shocked to find out that Nina Krilova has been executed in Russia.
When Nina asks about Vlad's death, Stan lies and promises her he will find out who killed him. When he gets home, Sandra asks him to quit the FBI and move away with his family. When he says no, she leaves him. He goes to Nina and attempts to end their affair, but ends up losing his resolve and sleeps with her instead.
Paige and Philip tell Stan to look after Henry and tell him the truth, because they have to abandon him and return to the USSR. Stan then decides to let the Jennings escape instead of arresting them.
As Stan gets to know Nina, he subsequently grows further apart from Sandra due to how much he works and is not able to spend time with his family. After Stan misses a family dinner due to work, a co-worker takes him to a bar and tells him to pick out a woman to have casual sex with.
She is tasked to try and turn Stan but starts to fall in love with him instead.[3] Agent Frank Gaad (Richard Thomas), Stan's FBI supervisor, gives him the keys to a safe house and tells him to take Nina there, which then becomes their "love nest".
Stan is unaware of the fact that Philip and Elizabeth are undercover KGBagents but becomes suspicious when he learns that a car similar to Philip's is seen near the site of a Soviet defector's abduction but finds nothing when he covertly inspects Philip's trunk.

While there, the Mossad agent taunted Philip about how his whole life was a lie. When the Soviet Union made a deal with the Mossad to release 1,500 Jews to Israel, the Mossad exchanged Anton for Philip's Mossad hostage. Philip drove Anton to a ship dock to transport him back to the Soviet Union.
As their marriage grows increasingly less of a sham, Philip begins to sacrifice mission safety in order to postpone or avoid entirely sexual contact between Elizabeth and anyone else. This causes tension between them, as Elizabeth recoils from the unintended implication that she isn't able to do her job.
When, at 17 years old, Philip is chosen by the Commissariat for a Leadership Group, their relationship ends. Philip was unaware he had gotten Irina pregnant just prior to joining the academy. Not wanting to jeopardize his career, she did not tell him about their child until two decades later.
Emmett asked Philip to do a brush-pass with his agent, Fred, to get intel on stealth technology. After the risky operation, Philip and Elizabeth went to the Connors’s hotel room to return the intel to Emmett. However, they found him, Leanne and their daughter, Amelia, murdered inside.

Philip describes being attacked by gangs at a young age while collecting milk across the city. One day he fought back, and beat one of the bullies to death. As a teenager, Philip dated a young Russian woman named Irina, who shared his dream of joining the KGB. When Philip is accepted into the Illegals Program, Irina breaks up with him and tells him that she's met someone else. Later, Irina also joins the KGB as an undercover agent in Europe. Philip trains for several years before meeting "Elizabeth Jennings," another member of the Illegals Program, who is assigned to be his wife in America. They move to Virginia in 1965 and have their first child, Paige, in 1967.
However, when season 3 comes to a close, Philip realizes the negativity of his emotions and thoughts, and feels he can't work for the KGB anymore when he is forced to kill a man to save Martha's skin. He is interrupted when Elizabeth focuses on Ronald Reagan 's Evil Empire speech instead of him.
Philip becomes very angry with Paige when she becomes very religious, partly due to the fact that he is jealous of her palpable belief in something, and that she becomes disrespectful when her parents don't approve. He is shown to be very rational and level-headed, but is prone to infrequent emotional outbursts.
Rhys spoke about what attracted him to the role of Philip: "He's a sort of gift of a part in that he's very sort of layered and multi-faceted. And when you meet him, he's at this great turning point in his life where everything's changing for him. You just get to do everything. You get to do the kung fu, and you get to do the emotional scenes, you get to do the disguises. It's the full package for an actor. It's a dream."
They have two children, Paige and Henry. After a failed deportation, Philip and Elizabeth kidnap Nikolai Timoshev, a defected KGB agent, who raped Elizabeth when she was in training. At the time of Timochev's kidnapping, counter-intelligence FBI agent Stan Beeman moves next door, causing Philip to suggest defecting themselves. Elizabeth declines and Philip murders Timoshev when he finds out he raped her. Elizabeth and Philip try to become a real married couple, but after finding out Elizabeth had an ongoing affair with Gregory Thomas ( Derek Luke ), a Black activist, he is hurt. She tells Philip that she is beginning to feel love for him for the first time in their 16-year relationship.
After leaving Martha's apartment one morning, Chris Amador, Stan's partner and Martha's ex-boyfriend, attacks Philip and is himself stabbed in the process. Despite Philip and Elizabeth's best attempts to keep him alive, he dies in his sleep. Gregory, who scrapped the car Philip used to transport Amador in, is soon fingered to the FBI.
Philip's tearful confession, straight from the gut, is the reason why Stan does nothing. He watches as the Jennings flee in their car and he just stands there, out of things to say, lost in thought. These were his friends, practically his family, and even though he caught them, he can't break them apart.
Stan is probably thinking of Henry, the boy he's come to love like he was his own, and how his role in the Jennings' incarceration would destroy that foundation.
For seasons now, the relationship between Stan and Henry has developed into something of a father-son dynamic. Stan's real son, Matthew, was always cold to him, with very different interests. But Henry liked sports, could talk to Stan about girls, loved playing video games on the couch.
One of the big dangling threads the finale never ties up is the true identity of Stan's second wife, Renee (Laurie Holden). Philip and Elizabeth suspect she's a soviet spy for the Center, and it's Philip's departing plea to Stan to keep an eye on her.
Philip was never around, Matthew was protected from Stan by his mother, and so Stan and Matthew found those absent relationships in one another. It's hard to know how that might continue. If Stan trusts Henry, he might reveal that the Jennings' final wish was for Henry to be safe and for Stan to protect him.
