four speedwaysThere are four speedways; one for each realm. Like in the previous games, you have to destroy enemies and objects and go through rings to win. Beating the speedway the first time earns a Dragon Egg, while the second time, it earns you a Light Gem.

Speedways Explained

Speedways are the only place in the game, Powerups aside, where Spyro can Fly as opposed to just Gliding. Year of the Dragon allows Spyro to compete in two types of Flying Challenges: Time Attack and Race, as well as a third Secret Challenge for Hunter that is accessed by finding him in a secret spot in the level during a Time Attack Challenge.

Time Attack

In the Time Attack Challenge, the goal is to destroy all of the Target Objects before time runs out. Destroying a Target Object will give you a specific Gem the first time you get it. A run is over when you either run out of time, land in the water or destroy all the Targets.

Race the Butterflies

Races are checkpoint-style races where Spyro starts at the back of the pack in 6 th place and has to work his way up to first place before three laps have been completed. The red dots help guide you to the Checkpoint rings, which you must pass, or else you’ll be failed. You’ll also fail if you touch the ground or otherwise land.

Secret Challenge

To find Hunter, follow the course until you get to the eighth and final Dandelion, then Hover to land on the island it was on. Look to your right to spot a grassy area with a large mushroom: Fly over there and look behind the mushroom to find Hunter!

Checkpoint 1

This level’s a bit of an oddball because after getting to the Return Home Portal, you can find Sgt. Byrd who can freely explore the entire level. For simplicity, we’re going to collect everything here that Spyro can before moving on to Sgt. Byrd’s take on the level.

Checkpoint 2

Glide over to the next tower and Flame the Mallet Rhynoc who shows up for his Purple Gem. Collect the Green Gem, then Glide out of the doorway on the left to reach an island with a Dragon Egg with baby Gladys. Glide back to the tower and this time go through the other doorway up the ramp to kill two Jackhammers and a Mallet, all with Purple Gems.

Checkpoint 3

At the landing spot, Flame the Rocket to cause it to fly into the statue and destroy a portion of it. Go right to pick up a lava rock and shoot it at a Flying Gecko (you’ll have to go after his Green Gem later). Pick up the Green Gem near the lava rock spot, then go right to collect two Red Gem and a Vase with a Purple Gem.

Checkpoint 4

Before exploring the rest of the level, check behind the pedestal where the statue was to kill two Jackhammers and a Mallet Rhynoc with Purple Gems, and collect a fourth Purple Gem off the ground. Return to the Return Home Portal and go around the corner to ride a Whirlwind up to a ledge with a Green and Red Gem.

Sgt. Byrd Exploration

As Sgt. Byrd, the first thing you’ll want to do is clear out all nine of the Flying Geckos left in the level for their Green Gems. There’s one flying about Sgt. Byrd’s hut, two flying about the two main towers where you can get to Sgt. Byrd’s hut, and a fourth above the gap between that island and the rest of the level where you played as Spyro.

Skateboard Challenges

The last Challenges to do here feature the grand return of the Skateboard. To get there from Sgt. Byrd’s island, look for the tower with a doorway at the bottom and ride the Whirlwind up to a balcony. From there you can Glide back to the Return Home Portal near where the Sorceress statue was.

Appearances

Original Game

The level's skybox features snowy mountains with purple ooze and a darker sky while the loading screen uses Sunrise Spring's skybox. Another example of this is Harbor Speedway.

Reignited Trilogy

This is the only realm in the game to not have an achievement/trophy reward associated with it.
