Students must be enrolled at least half-time in order to be considered. Courses can all be taken in one summer session or you can take three units in each session. If you have questions on whether you are eligible to use the Pell Grant
A Pell Grant is a subsidy the U.S. federal government provides for students who need it to pay for college. Federal Pell Grants are limited to students with financial need, who have not earned their first bachelor's degree, or who are enrolled in certain post-baccalaureate programs, through participating institutions. The Pell Grant is named after Democratic U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island, and w…
If more than one course is taken in any of the individual R, S, or V areas, then the highest grade in that individual area will be used to calculate the aggregate SJSU Studies GPA.
First year students are expected to complete this requirement within their first two semesters at SJSU. Minimum Grade: A minimum grade of “C-” or better (per the CSU General Education Breadth Requirements ).
Students complete 9 to 12 units of SJSU studies: 9 units of upper division general education courses (Areas R/S/V) and 0 to 3 units of 100W (Area Z). In some cases, SJSU Studies areas are integrated in a single course or overlap with the major.
See SJSU catalog for assistance with: The waitlist will be adjusted to give priority to graduating seniors and graduate students starting Nov 15, 2021 through 9 days after the start of the term (Feb 3, 2022). In order to move to the top of the waitlist, you must meet one of the following categories:
Students are allowed to repeat a course in which they had an unsuccessful attempt up to a maximum of two times (three attempts in total) within the CCCD District (OCC, CCC, GWC).
Students in most programs can repeat a passed or failed course twice for degree or certificate credit, to a maximum of three attempts per course. Although the previous attempts remain on your academic record, only the most recent attempt counts toward your credit totals and grade point averages.
All Undergraduate students have an initial unit limit of 17 units. Graduating seniors who have a graduation application on file for Fall 2022, Spring 2023 or Summer 2023 with the Registrar's Office by March 14, 2022, can register up to 19 units without a petition beginning Friday, June 24, 2022.
College students can retake a class a maximum of 3 times, most of the time. If they want to retake it a fourth time, they have to write a special letter to the school. It might not be worth it to redo a class so many times, as you would graduate late.
Retaking a course is a good solution for some students in some situations. It will improve the student's GPA and, although it will not remove the lower grade from the transcript, it will demonstrate that your student is interested in and capable of improving.
Students may not use this one-time-only allowance to subsequently repeat a passed course again after having repeated the same course for reasons noted in i) above, i.e., they may repeat a specific passed course only once.
Course Repeats with Grade Points Averaged Graduate students may repeat a maximum of 9 units of upper division or graduate course work for graduation credit. Course repeats with Grade Points Averaged will be assigned automatically for all eligible courses as soon as a student registers.
Grade Forgiveness/Grade Averaging The original grade remains on the transcript. However, the student's GPA will be refreshed using points earned by the new grade, regardless if the new grade is higher or lower than the original. Note that this only applies to courses taken and repeated at SJSU.
Double Major If a student has completed the requirements for two or more majors leading to the same baccalaureate degree (e.g., two B.A. degrees or two B.S. degrees) for the same graduation application period, those majors shall be acknowledged on a single diploma and on the student's transcripts.
The Consequences of Failing a Class A failing grade will likely hurt your GPA (unless you took the course pass/fail), which could jeopardize your financial aid. The failure will end up on your college transcripts and could hurt your chances of getting into graduate school or graduating when you originally planned to.
You will still need to repeat the course and will be liable for any fees associated with the course. It is important to remember: Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated in accordance with the Calculation of Grade Point Average Policy (PDF 88k). Fail grades remain on your official academic transcript.
There is a good chance that the failure will land up on your college transcript, and this could have certain negative consequences, such as decreasing your chances of getting into a graduate school, or jeopardize you graduating on time.
Many instructors may request that students have cameras on to help create a sense of connection and engagement with the class. If you have privacy concerns about having your camera on during class, talk to your instructor about this and ask if an alternative can be made available.
For most classes, the waitlist will remain active until 11:59pm August 27th. To add a class, you will go through the normal registration process and if the class is full you will be added to the waitlist.
You can access courses you are enrolled in through Canvas starting one week before the first day of the semester, as soon as the instructor publishes them. If you don’t see a course yet, wait until the semester starts. If you still don’t see it on Canvas, email your instructor.
If a student does not wish to be identified in a class recording, faculty may allow an “anonymous” option ( e.g., student temporarily turning off identifying information from the Zoom session, including name and picture, prior to recording). Students must obtain permission in advance to record any course materials.
Meeting other students, forming study groups, and connecting with peers online takes a little extra effort, but is definitely possible. You might ask your instructor if they are willing to open up an online class meeting session a few minutes early, to allow students to chat informally before class starts.
In Fall 2020, the normal CR/NC policy is once again in effect. Students can request a change to CR/NC grading for a specific course before the add deadline for the semester. But note that this option is only available for students with Junior or Senior standing, for courses outside the major, minor, or GE.
Students must have at least 60 units earned in order to take SJSU Studies courses. Can I waive the 100W course (Area Z)? The 100W course can be waived if a student scored an 11 or 12 on their Writing Skills Test (WST) and if the student's major permits a waiver.
To get a study abroad course approved for upper division GE courses, the Writing Skills Test (WST) must be fulfilled before submitting the petition. Submit a completed study abroad Academic Approval Form (AAF) with a course description/syllabus to Undergraduate Education.
In other words, maximum of 70 Earned Units from community college may count towards the 120 UE required for any undergraduate degree. A minimum of 40 UE must be earned at the upper division. For a BA degree, a minimum of 12 UE must be earned at the upper division.
If you wish to drop a minor, please complete the Drop Minor form. Send the completed form directly to your graduation evaluator. If you do not formally drop the minor, you will be held to those requirements. Similarly, if you currently have a double major and wish to drop one major, use the Drop Major form.
Workshops on the WST can be found at Peer Connections. You can only take your required 100W course after you pass the WST or 100A course. Some majors require the successful completion of a 100W course prior to taking any upper division coursework in the major.
A minor is like a “mini-major,” a grouping of classes around a specific subject matter, typically between 18-30 credits. A minor must be combined with a major/degree program and adds another layer of professional knowledge to your degree, enhancing your résumé and prospects in today’s competitive job market.
Matriculated undergraduate students who have taken, or plan to take a non-articulated course that satisfy requirements of a particular General Education or American Institutions area, will need file a petition with Undergraduate Education for review.

The SJSU General Education Program incorporates the development of skills, the acquisition of knowledge, and the integration of knowledge through the study of facts, issues, and ideas.
Students complete 9 to 12 units of SJSU studies: 9 units of upper division general education courses (Areas R/S/V) and 0 to 3 units of 100W (Area Z). In some cases, SJSU Studies areas are integrated in a single course or overlap with the major.
