or Coreq.”, it indicates that the course (s) that follow the phrase must be in progress or successfully completed prior to registering for the desired course (Prerequisite) or the course can be taken concurrently with the listed course (i.e. prerequisite with concurrency). This type of course description does not mean the courses must be taken together, rather that they can be taken together. If you do want to register for a prerequisite course at the same time as the course requiring the prerequisite, you must enter both CRNs at the same time on the CyberBear Add/Drop Classes registration page or you will received the prerequisite error message.
What is the definition of a prerequisite and a co-requisite? CyberBear/Banner defines a prerequisite as a course or a test that must be successfully completed prior to registering for the listed course. A co-requisite is a course that must be taken at the same time as another course.
A message will be sent to the student’s UMConnect account notifying them of the registration issue. The student will have 10 business days to adjust their registration for the next semester. If the student does not adjust their registration within 10 days, the Registrar’s Office will remove the course from the student’s registration and notify the student of the change in registration status.
You will want to complete the Prerequisite/Co-requisite Waiver Request form. Use the course description from your former institution as the supporting documentation. Submit the completed form to the department or instructor responsible for the course for which you are registering.
The course description can be found in the UM Catalog and in Academic Planner.
Some courses are typically taken together but per the course description don’t have to be taken together. In these cases, the course description will contain the phrase “Prereq. or coreq.” and the enforcement rule is entered in Banner as a “Prerequisite with Concurrency”. If the course descriptions indicate prereq. or coreq. and the student wants to register for both courses in the same semester, they must enter both CRNs at the same time on the CyberBear Add/Drop Classes registration page or they will receive the prereq. error message.
You will be required to take both courses over again or seek a waiver from the instructor .
Incomplete grade (s) in a prerequisite course must be resolved before prerequisite overrides are granted. Exceptions may be made for cases where a passing final course grade is certain at the time of the request.
If students have not taken the prerequisite course (s), they should contact their home department academic advisor to discuss an academic plan that will satisfy the prerequisite (s) in the upcoming semester .
Students may only submit ONE course per request, but they may submit several requests for the same semester.
The Grainger College of Engineering enforces prerequisites and concurrent registration requirements through the Enterprise/Self-Service System in addition to checks that each department conducts. It is up to the discretion of the College and departments which courses will have prerequisites enforced via Enterprise/Self-Service.
Prerequisites must be a specific course or list of courses that must be taken before registering for a course. Also include transfer equivalents (i.e. IT U103) if applicable and if the prerequisite has been renumbered, include both the new and original course number.
General statements (i.e. 40 credits or permission of instructor) cannot be hard-coded into Banner. A minimum grade (i.e. C or better) is required for each prerequisite. If not indicated, the default grades are C for undergraduate and B- for graduate level. An ‘IN’ grade does not satisfy the prerequisite check.
Required Prerequisites. Patriot Web will not restrict registration to students who meet the prerequisites unless those prereqs are hard-coded to the course. Hard-coding is not automatic; departments must request this for each individual course.
Course prerequisites are listed in the course description of a course. You can click the Catalog link at the top of this page to look up a course description. You can also access the description from within self-service registration by clicking on the Course Reference Number (CRN) after performing a search for the class you wish to take.
Any student attempting to enroll in a class that requires a specific prerequisite course may request a waiver of that requirement if an equivalent prerequisite course has been completed with a grade of 2.0/C or better. Submit a Prerequisite Waiver Request form to Student Success Services for review by a counselor.

We’re all thinking the same thing. What just fucking happened?? First year ended abruptly in the middle of me figuring life and school and friends out, second year was just miserable regression back to the age of 18 and being alone… and going into the last 2 years of decent freedom I’ve got no footing.
Are you guys as excited as me? I'm hyped out of my mind to come to UBC and I can't wait to go to Vancouver and UBC every single day. I am legit counting down.
