If students have no holds that block registration, they may add or drop classes continually through myPurdue before the semester begins. You may modify your schedule during the first week of the fall and spring semesters without financial implications. Beginning the second week of classes, you must initiate the request with our office .
After the first day of the term, withdrawal from your only or last class is considered a full withdrawal from the term and students must follow the full withdrawal procedures outlined above. Purdue has established deadlines for when students may withdraw from classes.
Go in person to the registrar's office to get a class withdrawal sheet. Some institutions also accept withdrawals through email. Look on your school's website for an email address for the registrar's office or the academic advisor's office. When in doubt, contact an academic advisor.

1, or maybe 2, W's is generally okay, but >5 is a major red flag. This sends the message that when the going gets tough, you cut and run rather than tough it out & do what you need to do to succeed.
It does not affect the student's GPA (grade point average). Although students may be reluctant to have a “W” on their transcript, sometimes “W” stands for Wisdom. Withdrawing from one class may make success in other classes manageable and allow your student to end the semester with a strong GPA.
Circumstances sometimes require that you withdraw from the University. If your situation warrants withdrawal, please first refer to the Refund Policy and then follow the steps below:
Attendance has important effects on your enrollment status at the University:
Dropping a course during weeks 3 and 4 of a full semester will result in a grade of 'W' on your academic record.
Revising your schedule to reduce your credit hour load, while remaining enrolled in at least one course, is considered "Dropping". If you are canceling the last or only class on your schedule, the university considers this "Withdrawing".
Consult your academic advisor before adding or dropping any classes, as it may affect your curriculum plan.
