What is the job of Homeland Security?

Homeland Security focuses on emergency planning, personal and physical security, as well as the National Incident Management System. While not all public safety career paths require a college degree, it can certainly help you prepare for and stand out among the competition.

80 to 120 hours of classroom training for new hires and 8-hour annual training for uniform personnel

Training Certifications and Accreditations

The Department of Public Safety Training and Development is an accredited New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (NYS DCJS) Instructor Development Course Training School and NYS DCJS Security Officer Training School

Recreational River Safety (online)

This 2 hour online course is aimed at those who may recreate around rivers such as swimmers, anglers and hikers. A digital certificate is issued upon completion of the course and quiz. This course is not suitable for those working around floodwater or emergency services.

Flood Worker Safety (online)

This four hour online course is aimed at those who need to work around flood waters during emergencies such as utility workers, drainage contractors, storm water engineers, hydrologists, and others that have a key function to support local emergency management arrangements.

Introduction to Swiftwater Responder (online)

This 8 hour online course is aimed at those wanting to complete the theory requirements of the Swiftwater Responder course. The course is useful to emergency service workers who may be responded to a flood or swiftwater rescue incident. The course is also useful for current swiftwater responders wishing to refresh their theoretical knowledge.
