A new national survey released by Achieve – Rising to the Challenge: Are High School Graduates Prepared for College and Work? – shows that approximately 50% of recent high school graduates report gaps in preparation for life after high school.
College students who have lower math attainment take remedial courses at much higher rates; 83% of college students who took less than Algebra II were required to take remedial coursework, compared with just 18% of students who had taken coursework beyond Algebra II in high school.
For example, if straight As in regular classes is worth a 4.0 GPA, under a weighted system, straight As in all AP classes would be worth 5.0 and straight A's in honors classes would be a 4.5. This also means under a weighted GPA system that a B in an AP class is a 4.0, which is the same as an A in a regular class.
A weighted GPA gives a higher corresponding number to classes that are AP, advanced or honors. In those cases, the corresponding numbers are slightly higher than those that are not weighted.
GPA can also be an important deciding factor for employers since most recent high school graduates have a little relevant work history. A GPA can be used to determine how seriously an applicant took their studies.
