I’m the kind that pays better." It’s one of the show’s best quotes, not only because it’s heard in almost every single episode, but also because it’s witty and memorable. In fact, the entire opening sequence with Castle’s narration and bits of dialogue from the show is one of the coolest hallmarks of Castle.
When Castle and Beckett encounter two Chinese men who don’t understand English, Castle gets to flaunt his knowledge of Chinese, saying "my partner is crazy and might start firing at any moment."
The outfit, as well as Alexis’s line, are references to Firefly, the Joss Whedon show that starred Nathan Fillion starred five years ago. When Castle still doesn’t understand the point his daughter is trying to make, Alexis adds “don’t you think you should move on?” which feels like a jab at both Fillion and fans of Firefly.
So, you see, even if you love someone with all you have, you cannot make them love you back if they don’t share your feelings. The truth is classical fairy tales make us better people. They help us become resilient, kind and even more intelligent. Reading these stories may have been entertaining in childhood, but now they are so much more.

A frog asked a princess why she was crying and she replied that she had dropped her golden ball into the pond. She promised anything if he would get it for her. He did and asked to eat from her plate, live in the castle, and that she be his friend. She did and he turned into a prince as he had been under a spell from a witch. They married and lived happily ever after.
A woman wished for a baby, even a tiny one. A fairy granted her wish and gave her a seed to plant. When it bloomed, a tiny baby was inside. A toad fell in love with the baby and kidnapped her. A swallow rescued the baby and took her away to warmer lands. There, Thumbelina found another tiny person just like her. He asked her to marry him and she became queen of the flowers.
One pig built a house of straw and the second a house of sticks, because they were lazy. The third took the time to build a strong house with bricks. When the big bad wolf came, he huffed and puffed and blew the straw and stick houses down. He couldn't blow down the brick house and the pigs put a pot of boiling water in the fireplace. The wolf fell into it and died.
Hansel and Gretel. The two childrens' wicked stepmother took them into the forest and left them there. They came upon a house made of sweets and they ate some. The evil witch that lived there locked them in a cage and was going to make a soup out of them.
Jack and the Bean Stalk. Jack took the family cow to sell and traded it for magic beans. His mother was angry and threw them out of the window. The next morning a giant beanstalk had grown. He climbed the beanstalk and found a giant there who had gold coins. Jack stole them and took them home.
Little Red Riding Hood's mother sent her to Grandma's house with a basket of goodies and told her not to talk to strangers. A wolf asked here where she was going and she told him. He went to Grandma's house, locked Grandma in the cupboard and put on her clothes. Little Red Riding Hood was surprised at Grandma's eyes, ears and teeth, remarking on how big they were. The wolf said the teeth were better for eating and he pounced. She screamed, some woodcutters heard her cry and rescued her.
They would, for instance, warn children about the dangers of going into the forests alone. Or they would show the dangers of trusting strangers or of not obeying your parents. That’s why, fairy tales were often gruesome and gory. Over time, almost all fairy tales have been toned down.
The Dane’s tale was no all-singing and all-dancing affair under the sea, but rather quite a grim story of the sacrifices some people are prepared to make in the name of love.
Disney’s 1940 movie Pinocchio was based on an 1881 serial penn ed by Carlo Collodi. As you might have guessed, the screenwriters took the general premise of the Italian’s story for their animated feature film, though of course they left out a few choice elements. The end result was a tale missing some of the darker details of the original version – unsurprisingly since Disney were out to make a sweet morality tale for children rather than scare their young viewers.
Other dark details understandably omitted in more recent versions of the Pinocchio story include the bit where the puppet’s feet are burned off soon after he runs away for the first time. And then there’s the bit where Pinocchio steals some gold coins, gets caught and is hanged for his crimes.
The 2005 Disney movie might have introduced the story of a chick who fears the sky is caving in to the modern world, but the fable has been around for centuries. And many of the earlier versions were nowhere near as sweet and innocent as the cartoon. Indeed, historians of folk takes believe this one goes back more than 2,500 years and has been used in a wide range of different cultures to warn of the dangers of mass hysteria.
However, while Pinocchio might be mischie vous in the Disney movie, in the original stories, he is downright villainous. Most notably, Jiminy the Talking Cricket, a key character in the movie, is killed in one of the opening chapters.
Or at least a sanitized version of it is. The original version, written by Hans Christian Andersen and published in 1844, can make for uncomfortable reading. In this version, the duckling is not just laughed at but subjected to some pretty horrendous abuse, though this serves to make the happy ending even more satisfying.
We’re fairly certain that Petrus Gonsalvus’ life inspired French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve to write “Beauty and the Beast,” which was published in 1740 in LaJeune Américaine et les Contes Marins. There are far more fairy tales than just these out there, of course, and a lot more horrifying history.

The story: A merchant with a huge family going through a tough time seeks shelter during a terrible storm. A beautiful palace opens its doors to him, feeds him, and allows him to rest. In the morning, before he leaves, he spots a rose garden and takes a flower to give to Beauty, his youngest child (and also objectively the “best” one — she’s smart, beautiful, and kind, whereas the merchant’s other kids are jerks) — but when he does so, he’s caught by a “Beast,” who tells him that because he stole a rose after accepting his hospitality, he must die. However, they strike a bargain: The merchant can go free if one of his daughters returns.
Wikimedia Commons. The story: When Rapunzel’s mother is pregnant with her, she has the worst pregnancy cravings ever for the green for which the little girl will eventually be named — which, as luck would have it, grows bountifully in the garden of the witch next door.
The story: A dude dressed in colorful clothing and carrying a pipe appears in a town suffering from a plague of rats and offers to rid the townspeople of their problem — for a price, of course. The mayor agrees. By playing infectious music on his pipe, the piper lures the rats away and into a nearby river, where they drown. The mayor then reneges on his agreement to pay the piper the fee he’d been promised — so the piper returns one day when all the adults are at church and plays his pipe again. This time, though, he lures the town’s children away. They’re never seen again.
The story: Hansel and Gretel, a brother and sister, live together with their parents in a cottage in the forest. Although their father, a woodcutter, is kind, he’s kind of spineless, so when his cruel wife tells him that in order for them to survive a famine, they’ve got to abandon the kids in the woods, he does so.
Her tears restore his sight, they return to his kingdom, and they live happily ever after. The history: Saint Barbara , an early Christian Greek saint and martyr (who, to be fair, may or may not be mythical ), is believed to have been an inspiration for at least part of the Rapunzel tale.
Cats being cats, the cat makes up a story and says she’s becoming a godmother in order to secretly visit the church, so she asks the mouse to stay and watch their place. The cat comes home and eventually becomes a ‘godmother’ two more times.
Rapunzel. ‘ Rapunzel ‘ is another tale of a couple who want a child to call their own – but with a different outcome. While the woman is pregnant, she has a strong craving for rampion, which grows in her neighbor’s yard, and her husband frequently sneaks into the yard to take some rampion for his wife.
To make their household a cohesive unit, they each have a specific role within the home: the bird collects wood for the fire; the mouse is in charge of collecting water, lighting the fire and setting the table; and the sausage keeps everyone well fed.
The Juniper Tree. ‘ The Juniper Tree ‘ is a disturbing account of a young boy who is murdered by his stepmother – clearly, stepmothers are often evil in these stories. Knowing that the son will inherit everything upon his father’s death, the stepmother decapitates the young boy when he reaches into a box for an apple.

When you think of fairy tales, you most likely think of sweet stories heard as a child; however, Grimm fairy tales weren’t intended for children, but rather, adults, ...
When the Dame finds out, she cuts off Rapunzel’s hair and banishes her to the desert, where she gives birth to twins. The Dame also blinds the king’s son, but he eventually finds his way to Rapunzel and is healed.
A young princess will only marry if her intended agrees to one thing: if she dies first, he will be buried alive with her . A young man from a poor family leaves his home so that he can earn his keep and not be a burden to his father. He meets the princess and falls madly in love with her, agreeing to her demand. They are married, but after a while, she becomes ill and dies. He follows through on his word and is placed in the vault with her coffin. While in there, a snake appears and he hacks it into three pieces. Another snake appears and heals the dead snake with three leaves, and they both leave. The husband then places the leaves on his wife, and she comes back from the dead! However, she no longer loves him and throws him overboard, with the help of her lover, while on a sea voyage. His servant rescues him, and they tell the king everything. The princess and her lover are sent out to sea on a sinking ship. The end.
The story is set during the Great Famine of 1315. Many people starved to death during this time. Acts of extreme cruelty, such as infanticide and cannibalism, took place as people became more desperate. The situation for some families became so wretched that they left their children to fend for themselves.
Hansel and Gretel. This is one of those fairy tales that is famous because the story resonates with children today. It tells of a poor woodcutter and his second wife. She is the stepmother to his children – Hansel and Gretel. As food becomes scarce, the stepmother decides there is not enough food for the children.
However, the real-life tale is not so pretty and there’s no happy ever after for Cinders. The story is based around a slave girl in ancient Greece, around 500BC. Rhodopis was a beautiful young Greek woman. At a young age, she was taken from her home in Greece and forced into slavery.
Here, Margarete began a lustful affair with Prince Philip II of Spain. However, his father, the King of Spain vehemently disagreed with the romance. He organised a plot to kill Margarete.
Luckily, her brother races to her rescue in time to kill Bluebeard. This famous fairy tale is based on two real-life characters. Conomor the Cursed is a savage 6th-century ruler in Breton. This Breton chief had been warned that one of his sons would end up killing him.

She was bold and brave, and she gave it her all when it came to school, being the most popular, getting the guy, dressing in the most stylish way and delivering golden quote after golden quote. In the season two episode “The Double Down ”, Castle and Beckett are investigating a murder of a woman whose killer left messages written on her face.
After making the arrest, Beckett turns to Castle to congratulate him on a great shot, to which he replies “I was aiming for his head,” quoting Jayne Cobb's line from Firefly.
In the season two episode “Boom,” Beckett loans her gun to Castle while pursuing a serial killer obsessed with Nikki Heat, aka Castle's character based on Kate Beckett. Giving her gun to Castle turns out to be the right call when Castle manages to shoot and wound the killer.
In the season three episode “Last Call,” Castle gets carried away when a murder case takes them back in time to the prohibition era. But, Beckett as always acts as the voice of reason and pokes holes in Castle’s theory causing him to utter this unforgettable line: “don’t ruin my story with your logic.”.
In the awesome season three episode titled “Close Encounters of the Murderous Kind”, Castle goes full X-Files when the team encounters a victim that appears to have died from fatal explosive decompression in her car and Castle starts suggesting Mulder-like explanations for what happened. The episode is chock-full of X-Files references, as expected, but there’s also a very cool reference to Firefly.
