The 4 pre-birth questions have been changed with removal of the question related to the number of babies. The 8th edition questions are : (1) Gestational age? (2) Amniotic fluid clear? (3) Additional risk factors? (4) Umbilical cord management plan?
80%NRP Provider Course Part 1: The provider exams are 25 questions each. You have unlimited attempts to reach the minimum passing score of 80% on each exam.
The test can be taken from any internet connection, including your ipad, laptop or PC. Take as much time as you need to prepare. Pass the online exam and print out your certification card instantly. Renew your Neonatal Resuscitation certification by choosing our recertification package.
2 secondsThe compression to ventilation ratio is 3:1 and each set of 3 compressions to 1 breath should take 2 seconds such that there are 120 “events” per minute. After 60 seconds of chest compressions, the heart rate should be reassessed.
how many events are performed each minute? 120 events. One and Two and Three and Breathe. 3 to 1 ratio of compressions to breath.
The timeline during neonatal resuscitation for the invasive procedures of intubation or venous access is 45-60 seconds to administer the first dose of epinephrine (NRP, 2011).
30 secondsProvide chest compressions if the heart rate is absent or remains <60 bpm despite adequate assisted ventilation for 30 seconds. Coordinate chest compressions with ventilations at a ratio of 3:1 and a rate of 120 events per minute to achieve approximately 90 compressions and 30 breaths per minute.
approximately 20 secondsSince the American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Program recommends that intubation should be completed in approximately 20 seconds, we measured the duration of neonatal intubation attempts by different operators, using video recordings of neonatal resuscitations.
2 yearsA: NRP Provider cards are valid for 2 years, regardless of what edition course you completed. If you take a 7th edition course now, your card is still valid for 2 years.
After passing the exam, you must attend the NRP instructor-led course within 30 days. After 30 days, the exam becomes invalid and must be retaken, which requires the purchase of a new exam.
The 8th Edition of NRP is now available! The links below will help you keep up to date on the latest information regarding the new edition and changes to the NRP courses, materials, and Learning Platform.
Nine out of ten neonates successfully transition from fetus to newborn. Unfortunately, the remaining 10% of neonates require assistance from medical providers. Less than 10% of these newborn babies (approximately 1% overall) will require neonatal resuscitation.
The transition from fetus to neonate, commonly called birth, is one of the most profound changes that human will ever undergo. During this transition, the fetus ceases to receive blood, oxygen, and nutrients from the maternal circulation and must derive those things from the outside world.
As with any complex biological process, sometimes things can go wrong. The transition from fetal to neonatal life may not occur smoothly. Any one (or more) of the things that must change during the transition may not actually change. Perhaps the neonate has air in the lungs, but the blood vessels surrounding the alveoli do not relax.
There are some clues that can indicate that a baby may require resuscitation.
The Apgar score is a standardized score that provides information on the condition of the baby when the baby is born. The score quantifies 5 key factors: color, heart rate, reflex irritability, muscle tone, and respiration.
The initial assessment of every newborn baby, performed at the moment of birth, includes three questions: 1. Is the baby born at term? 2. Is the baby breathing/crying? 3. Does the baby have good muscle tone? If the answer to all three of these questions is yes, the baby may stay with the mother.
If parts of the baby’s body appear blue, rather than pink, it could indicate cyanosis, or low oxygen in the blood. To confirm cyanosis, you can use a pulse oximeter. An oximeter provides the percentage of oxygenation in the blood (specifically hemoglobin). Place the oximeter in the baby’s right hand or wrist to get a preductal

You will then have access to your NRP Provider eCard on the Resuscitation Credentials page under your Profile.
The initial steps of neonatal resuscitation include drying, stimulation, and perhaps suctioning. You must dry the infant with a towel then throw the towel away from the infant. If you leave a wet towel on the infant, the infant will get cold and your resuscitation will be inefficient. Next, you must stimulate gently .
Preparation for a delivery is a must. You certainly don’t want a doctor standing beside you “blowing wind tunnels” waiting for you to rummage through the drawers looking for supplies!
Next, you must stimulate gently. There is no need to stimulate vigorously.
All steps of resuscitation must be performed quickly and efficiently. All healthcare providers who work in Obstetrics must be aware of the conditions that may cause an infant to require neonatal resuscitation. Click here to view our blog on anticipating neonatal resuscitation.
A: NRP Provider cards are valid for 2 years, regardless of what edition course you completed. If you take a 7th edition course now, your card is still valid for 2 years. If you retake NRP on or after January 1, 2022, you will need to complete an 8th edition course. When the 8th edition is released in June 2021, some institutions may want to update their staff on the changes to the science, but how and when they do so is up to each institution.
A: The NRP 8th edition materials will be released in June 2021. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is currently taking pre-orders on the textbook and print materials at Shop/AAP.org.
A: Since there is new science and a new LMS for the 8th edition NRP, Instructor-led classes will need to be either all 7th edition or all 8th edition. It is recommended that institutions transition all their classes to the 8th edition at the same time to ensure that their staff are all trained in the same guidelines.
A: No. There will still be Instructor-led (traditional) NRP. For those hospitals using RQI for other courses, like RQI Healthcare Provider (BLS), RQI PALS, etc., there will be option for RQI® for NRP®, which is a self-directed quarterly curriculum.
