You may enroll in some classes with the understanding that you will receive a P (pass) or N (no credit) rather than a grade. The P/N option was created to allow you to experiment with classes outside your usual sphere of interest without endangering your academic standing. To receive a P notation, you must earn a D or better in the class.
As explained in question #1, if you complete the course at the “C” or better level, you will receive a “Pass (P)” on your transcript. If you finish the course at the “D” or “F” level, you will receive a “No Pass (NP)” on your transcript.
Courses taken as P/NC will count as attempted credits in Satisfactory Academic Progress calculations. Courses completed with a P will count as completed credits. Courses completed with an NC are not considered completed credits.
Pass (P) grade will count as earned credits, but will have no impact on your GPA. No Credit (NC) grade will count as attempted, but not earned credits.
Occasionally a student decides to major or minor in some area in which he or she has already taken a class P/N and has earned a grade of P. If this happens to you, you can petition for permission to count the class toward your major or minor.
On your transcript a “CR” (credit) or “NC” (no credit) will appear instead of a grade. When taking a course CR/NC you are considered a regular member of the class and must meet all the academic commitments of the course on schedule. The instructor will not be notified of your CR/NC registration.
No. They will definitely not effect your CGPA in any way.
Undergraduate students may elect a Pass/No-Credit (P/NC) grading option. They may do so by indicating their choice in writing to the Office of the Registrar or online using the student records course edit in my.tcu.edu no later than the date listed in the academic calendar for electing the P/NC grading option.
If you wish to take a course with the Pass/No Credit designation, you must file an approved Pass/No Credit Form, with the Registrar's before deadline date specified in the academic calendar.
P = pass (passing grade equivalent to a “B” or 3.0 quality or better for graduate and “C–” or 1.7 for an undergraduate credit course taken on a Pass/No Pass basis)
D 1.0. F 0. X Failed to earn credit, missed final examination (0 Grade Point) Y Failed to earn credit, work incomplete (0 Grade Point)
4.1Average GPA: 4.1 The average GPA at Northwestern is 4.1. This makes Northwestern Extremely Competitive for GPAs. (Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.
A letter grade of a D is technically considered passing because it not a failure. A D is any percentage between 60-69%, whereas a failure occurs below 60%.
Most Northwestern classes are worth one unit of credit. Only one class per quarter may be taken P/N. The total number of units of credit you take P/N may be no more than six. (Classes offered only on a P/N basis are exempt from this six-unit limit.)
Only free elective classes are open to P/N. Classes taken to fulfill your first-year seminar requirement and your distribution requirements, and all classes used to attain Weinberg College foreign language proficiency, must be taken for a grade . You need to earn at least a C- in all major courses and all minor courses--including all related courses ...
You must decide whether or not to take a class P/N during the first three weeks of the quarter. The exact deadline for changing to or from P/N is given in each quarter's Class Schedule. You can make the change through CAESAR.

Final grades are recorded in CAESAR. Two weeks before grades are due, grade rosters are generated based on the enrollment in the course, and from then until the deadline, instructors can save grades in CAESAR or using a tool in Canvas called GradeSync.
Spring 2020 Grading for Graduate Students in Quarter-Based Programs: Grade rosters will display quality grade choices (ABC, etc.) for instructors to assign to graduate students.
The Office of the Registrar contacts instructors according to their class assignments in CAESAR to alert them when grade rosters have been opened for grading, typically two weeks before the deadline during the academic year.
