Most unusual is the tangled wisteria vine that clings to the clubhouse, thought to be among the first ever in the U.S., and a hard-to-spot palm tree short and right of the green at the par-3 4th, a hole that was called “Palm” in its early days. 13. On Sunday, the leaders usually tee off around 2:00-3:00 p.m. and the tournament normally finishes between 6:00-7:00 p.m. with the presentation of the green jacket to the winner. Typically Saturday and Sunday rounds are played with two players per group.
Wednesday afternoon is the Par 3 contest, which is played on a separate 9-hole / par-27 course on the northeast corner of Augusta National . Players often have family members or even their children caddy for them during this contest. An interesting piece of trivia is that no player has ever won the Wednesday Par 3 contest and then gone on to win the Masters tournament itself in the same year. In fact, some players even consider it bad luck to win the Par 3 contest. For many years, arguably the three greatest golfers of their generation, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Gary Player would be grouped together to play the Par 3 contest.
Friday is the second tournament round. The first two rounds typically start around 8:00 a.m. and the full field of golfers are playing those days, usually in threesomes. After Friday’s competition, they cut the competition to only the top 50 scores (including ties) and/or any golfer within 10 strokes of the leader.
Rounds three and four on Saturday and Sunday start a little bit later in the morning (usually around 10:00 a.m.) and the players tee off in reverse order of their scores: the golfers furthest behind the leader tee off earlier, and the leaders tee off last.
The practice rounds (including Wednesday’s Par 3 contest) are the only time cameras are permitted on the course, so it’s a good opportunity to take some pictures of the event and see the pros in a more relaxed atmosphere.
2nd green – One of the best viewing spots on the whole course. You get to watch the approach shot and get right up against the green.
One of the great things about the Masters is the fact you can setup you chair almost anywhere on the course, leave it there, and no one will touch it.
The drive on this tight hole is often played to the left-center of the fairway to set up a second shot from a level lie. From there, a short to mid-iron may be played, but it is important to avoid the three bunkers in front of the green and the two behind.
A pond guards the green to the left and a bunker is strategically placed right center. Hole 12: Golden Bell. By: One of the world's most famous golf holes, this is Augusta National's shortest par three.
The first is a slight dogleg right that plays uphill. Drives to the left may catch the trees. The hole requires a precise second shot to an undulating green. A poorly struck approach may result in a difficult two-putt.
2021 Masters prize money breakdown. For the third straight year, Augusta National is paying out from a $11.5 million pool of winnings.
Players often drive down the right side to avoid having to contend with two left greenside bunkers on their second shots. Hole 10: Camellia. By: This long par four plays steeply downhill and features a nearly 60-yard-long center bunker well short of the green. It is traditionally the most difficult hole on the course.
15. From 1943 to December 1944, Augusta National closed as a golf club. At Jones’ suggestion, it chose to support the war effort and improve its own finances by housing 200 head of cattle and more than 1,000 turkeys. The livestock kept the grass “mowed,” but they also beat up the fairways and devoured the plantings. Forty-two German POWs held at nearby Fort Gordon were brought over to restore the course. Members of a bridge-building engineering crew in Rommel’s Africka Corps, the POWs erected a bridge over Rae’s Creek near the 13th tee that lasted until the 1950s.
23, 1983, President Ronald Reagan was playing at Augusta National as a guest of his secretary of state (and club member) George Schultz when his round was interrupted at the 16th hole by a disgruntled local named Charles Harris, who had crashed his truck through the gate and was demanding to see the President. Harris held hostages at gunpoint in the pro shop for two hours before Secret Service agents subdued him.
Yet, records show Alister MacKenzie had first conceived of the current configuration, then changed the plan prior to construction in 1931, possibly to have the 18th (the present 9th) finish near the “new” clubhouse. The nines were reversed, to their present order, because the lowest parts of the course (today’s 10th through 12th holes) were susceptible to frost and drainage issues. Switching the nines allowed play to start earlier — and yes, for more drama near round’s end.

The previous year’s Masters winner gets to pick the menu for the famous Champions Dinner on Tuesday night, but that doesn’t mean the former champions have to eat it. Attendees are free to order off the clubhouse menu, and many do. When Sandy Lyle served haggis, Scotland’s national dish, in 1989, Jack Nicklaus quipped, “Oh, I hope he enjoys it.”
