Golden West College offers two types of certificate awards in career programs designed to prepare the graduate to enter a particular field of employment. Certificate of Achievement: Requires 12 or more units in a state approved program. Certificates of Achievement are not automatically awarded.
Units and Residency requirements: Students must complete at least 60 degree units. A minimum of 12 units must be taken at Golden West College. At least six of these units must be in courses required for the major. GPA requirements: Students must have a cumulative minimum 2.0 grade point average.
Student Parking Permits will NOT be required for parking at Golden West College during the Fall 2021 and Intersession/Spring 2022 semesters. An excused withdrawal occurs when due to specific events beyond the control of the student affecting their ability to complete courses.
In order to earn a Certificate of Achievement all courses that apply to the certificate must be completed with a minimum grade of “C” in each course unless otherwise stated. A minimum of 12 units in residence at GWC is required, and 50 percent of the certificate program must be completed at GWC.
Students may personally hand in their transcripts to the Admissions & Records Office or mail it directly to GWC, Attention: Admissions & Records 15744 Goldenwest St, Huntington Beach, CA 92647.
Official transcripts may be submitted electronically to Admissions and Records from your sending institution via PDF. The transcripts must be sent directly from the sending institutions authorized agent to [email protected].

12 creditsA college student is considered to be enrolled on a full-time basis for student financial aid purposes if they are enrolled for at least 12 credits a semester. Since a class typically requires at least three credits, 12 credits will require four classes per semester. Half-time enrollment requires at least six credits.
For each 1 unit of in-class time for a lecture class, schedule 2-3 hours per week for studying. For example, a student enrolling in 12 lecture units should plan on a weekly total of 36 hours for school: 12 hours for in-class attendance, and at least 24 hours of study outside of class.

Currently GWC does not provide on-campus housing, but there are several options available for long-term and short-term housing near the school for you to choose from.

Prerequisite Clearance: 1st 8 weeks to 2nd 8 weeks. If you are taking a course during the 1st 8-weeks of the semester that is a prerequisite for a course you intend to register for during the 2nd 8-weeks, use this form to show proof of enrollment, allowing you to register for your next course. If you believe you have met a requirement for a degree or certificate offered at GWC at another community college or university, use the Petition for Degree/Certificate Course Substitution form to show proof of completion of the course (or requirement).
If you are not passing a course in the current semester and intend to register for the same course in the following semester in order to make up the grade, use the Early Grade Report to allow Enrollment Services to “force” the drop of the class, allowing you to register for the same course in the upcoming semester.
Permanent membership is awarded to students completing 60 transferrable units from any California Community College, with two semesters of membership, and a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better. Permanent members receive recognition on their GWC transcript and diploma and at the state level.
To view your unofficial transcripts, log-in to MyGWC.com, click on the “My Records” tab on the left navigation bar, then click on “Unofficial Transcripts”. For Transcript Level select “GWC Undergraduate” and for Transcript Type select “Unofficial Transcript”.
What will happen after I submit the graduation petition? Your petition will go through a series of evaluation. Please ensure successful completion of all your in progress courses. If you do not have in progress courses, no further action is required unless notified.
Graduation ceremony, also known as Commencement, takes place every year towards the end of May after the Spring semester to celebrate the previous year’s Summer and Fall graduates, as well as this year’s Spring graduates.
Certificates of Specialization are not printed on official academic transcripts. A list of career programs and requirements can be found in the Degrees and Program Section of the Golden West catalog. Check with a counselor to determine the requirements for completion. COURSEWORK FROM OTHER COLLEGES.
Degrees and certificates are not automatically awarded when you have completed all your requirements. If you are seeking an Associates Degree or a Certificate, you may submit a petition to graduate during the filing periods. Please petition during your last semester using this form (see below).
Although regalia is not required to participate in Commencement exercises, graduates may wish to dress in regalia for their Virtual Commencement photo or video.
If you are transferring to Golden West from another college or university, welcome! There are some things you may need to do before registering for classes.
If you are attempting to enroll into a class that has prerequisites and you have completed those prerequisites at another college/university, use the Prerequisite Clearance form to upload unofficial transcripts. If you have questions about whether or not you have met the prerequisites with prior coursework, please contact Counseling.
If you attended another college or university, you can use the Parchment Digital Credential Service to order your official transcripts to be sent to Golden West College. Most transcripts are sent digitally, and you will receive a confirmation email when they have been received by our Admissions/Records office.
Even if you had your AP scores sent to a previous college, the scores won't transfer to GWC with your official transcript from the college you attended. If you want the AP scores to be applied toward credit at Golden West College, you will need to order official scores from College Board to be sent to GWC.
If you attended a college/university in a country outside of the United States, we recommend using a third-party evaluation service to have your transcripts evaluated for equivalency. GWC Counselors can review the official evaluation to advise you as to how coursework can be applied toward your studies here.
If you have completed a degree (Associate degree, Baccalaureate degree, etc.) and intend to use coursework toward a degree here at Golden West, have your official transcripts sent to Golden West College. Once you receive confirmation that they have been received, contact Counseling for an official evaluation.
RETURNING STUDENTS. If it has been over a year since you last registered for a course at Golden West, Coastline or Orange Coast College, you are considered a Returning Student and DO need to re-apply to the college . Your date and time to register should appear under "Next Registration Appointment" once it has been assigned. The certificate programs normally include only those courses which have a direct bearing upon specialized occupational competency since the objective of earning the career certificate is immediate employment in a specialized area.
The coursework for the Certificate of Specialization must be under 18 units. This certificate is not approved by the State, there is no acknowledgment of completion given at graduation, and it is not recorded on a transcript.
