The order of courses in the Courses block doesn't seem to follow any rule that I can see... it's not alphabetically listed, nor is it listed in the same order the courses are listed on our moodle homepage. A bug was introduced in 1.4.2 that messed up the ordering, but it's fixed in current versions. The order is the same as the category ordering on the main course listing (from top to bottom).

I did a code review a while ago, and it seems that the courses are ordered by "sortorder" but not grouped by category first. This would explain Teresa's symptoms:

the fix to bug 2497 did not really work for me. I upgraded to 1.4.3.+ (2004083134) but now the sequence is totally out of order as is was some months before. Maybe the reason is that I use nested categories (courses placed in up to three levels of categories)?

I'm not a programmer, but I am on 1.6.2. I discovered that as an admin I can set the order of the course categories and then every time I add a new course I have to sort users alphabetically in the admin courses panel. It's not perfect, but it works. Does this help? If you need clarification - just post again.

Yes I do the same thing as an administrator but that is not the point.
