When there is an increase of phosphorus in lakes, this leads to and increase in phytoplankton. This then leads to a decrease in water clarity. The reason that this is relevant is because eutrophication is when a body of water receives excess nutrients which results in excessive algae growth (ISP 217 Lab 4 Part 1).
