If the teacher sees you searching through your notes, they might not call on you because they know you are trying to find the right answer. Pretend to write down notes. You should write real notes too, but if you are trying to trick your teacher not to call on you, pretend to write more notes.
1. Overcome speaking anxiety. If you want to avoid getting called on in class is because you are nervous to talk in front of other people, you might have a speaking anxiety. You can overcome this by being prepared for class and feeling confident and positive. Start your answers strong and don’t mumble.
If you come to class unprepared, you won’t know the answer to any questions. Do any homework assignments before class so you are prepared for any questions that the teacher might ask. If you feel confident, you won’t have to worry about avoiding the teacher and you will have a better experience in class.
When your teacher is scanning the room trying to decide who to call on, do not make direct eye contact with the teacher. However, don’t clearly avoid eye contact and definitely don’t look down. Look away for a second then look back at the teacher then look away again.
You want to try to sit in the teacher’s blind spot so they hopefully don’t notice you. Where you sit depends on the style of your classroom and your teacher. Try to sit in the edge of the classroom, out of the teacher’s main focus of vision.

A teacher is dedicated to learning, to his or her discipline, to his or her students, and to making the future the best possible place for all of us to live. These are the challenges I accepted when I chose to be a teacher. I remain committed to them.
I know the good teacher must have a deep appreciation of how knowledge is created in the discipline, how it is organized and how it is linked to other disciplines.
I love the subjects I teach, and I know how to make them come alive for my students. A good teacher cannot begin or continue to inspire learning without being a learner. The good teacher must constantly learn what is new in the discipline. In fact, the good teacher often helps to create new knowledge.
Memorization is not always learning because learning requires thinking. I am beginning to understand that the teacher’s greatest gift to the learner is helping the learner be motivated to think, and then to want to learn more. I believe in the power of questions and questioning strategies to cause thinking.
If by the winter you never raise your hand again, teachers will still think of you as a good participant. They still will call on you at a lesser rate than they do for other students. It takes a few weeks of work.
Remember that the questions and answers are for all students, not just for the one who answered the question. They are an integral part of the lesson, and the learning. A better teacher has strategies such as these questioning techniques, to help all the students in the class.
The trick to not being called on, ironically, is to set the impression that you always have an answer. On the first day of a new class, EVERY time your teacher asks a question, raise your hand. Raise it fast. And if they call on you, have an answer for them.
Another option is to make your best effort to answer the question, even if that means guessing a bit.
