The Election of 1868 was the first Presidential Election to take place after the American Civil War and was held on November 3, 1868. The Election of 1868 was a landmark in African American history, as it was the first presidential election in which the newly freed slaves could vote.
For every crime except one the per 100,000 rates are still higher in 2010 compared to the 1960s lows. The one exception is murder. While the 50-year low for murder per 100,000 was in 1962 and 1963 with 4.6 per 100,000, those years were actually down a bit from the rest of the 1960s which ranged from 4.8 to 7.3.
The U. S. population was 186 million in 1962; 253 million in 1992 and 309 million in 2010. . That is a 36% increase in population by 1992 and 66% increase by 2010. So the murder rate is basically the same as it was in 1962. This is the most logical and intelligent answer on this thread.

Colfax is most known for a Reconstruction Era massacre known as the Colfax massacre which took place Easter, April 13, 1873 to quell black voting.

In the wake of the contested 1872 election for governor of Louisiana and local offices, a group of white men armed with rifles and a small cannon overpowered black freedmen and state militia occupying the Grant Parish courthouse in Colfax.
The Colfax Massacre of 1873, also known as the Colfax Riot, was the deadliest incident of racial and political violence during the Reconstruction era, claiming the lives of at least seventy and perhaps as many as 150 men. Nearly all of the victims were African American.

While the massacre made headlines across the country and 97 members of the white mob were indicted, in the end only nine men were charged of violating the Enforcement Acts of 1870 and 1871, sometimes known as the Klu Klux Klan Acts, intended to guarantee the rights of freedmen under the 14th and 15th Amendments.
In August 1874, the White League murdered six white Republicans and as many as 20 black witnesses in Coushatta, Louisiana. Following the massacre, Louisiana governor William Kellogg issued the following statement.

On November 23, 1887, a mass shooting of African-American farm workers in Louisiana left some 60 dead. Bodies were dumped in unmarked graves while the white press cheered a victory against a fledgling black union.

The nation suffered an economic downturn during his Presidency due to the occupation of the South and ongoing reconstruction which negatively impacted his popularity. Grant also oversaw the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad; and was also credited with improving relations with Great Britain.
Horatio Seymour’s run for presidency began with maintaining the status quo of the Democratic party to its antebellum state. Seymour opposed President Abraham Lincoln’s Civil War-era policies of emancipation and the use of a military draft.

Of those men, 29 were taken to the local prison, and 27 of them were summarily executed. The bloodshed continued for two weeks, with African-American families killed in their homes, shot in public, and chased down by vigilante groups. C.E. Durand, the other editor of the St. Landry Progress, was murdered in the early days of the massacre and his body displayed outside the Opelousas drug store. By the end of the two weeks, estimates of the number killed were around 250 people, the vast majority of them African-American.
The Opelousas massacre also set the stage for future acts of violence and intimidation. “Lynching became routinized in Louisiana, a systematic way by which whites sought to assert white supremacy in response to African-American resistance,” said historian Michael Pfeifer, the author of The Roots of Rough Justice: Origins of American Lynching, by email. “This would be an important precedent for the subsequent wave of lynchings that occurred in Louisiana from the 1890s through the early decades of the twentieth century, in which lynch mobs killed more than 400 persons, most of them African American.”
On September 13, the Republicans held a meeting in the town of Washington, not far from Opelousas, and found streets lined with armed Seymour Knights.
Editors of Democratic newspapers repeatedly warned of dire consequences if the Republican party continued winning victories at the polls. Those editorials spurred Democrats to action and instigated violence everywhere, wrote Warmoth in his book War, Politics, and Reconstruction: Stormy Days in Louisiana.
An article in National Affairs in the spring of 2018 investigated the same issue, listing the “Deadliest American Mass shootings” by the president, beginning with Lyndon Baines Johnson , who took office in 1963. Similar to the report in Truth Stream Media, National Affairs attributed 24 of the deadliest mass shootings to the Obama administration, three times more than the two previous administrations and more than the three preceding administrations combined. The article noted that the Obama administration was heavily criticized for not addressing the terrorist nature, specifically Islamist, of several of the attacks.
AUTHOR’S EDITORIAL OPINION: Determining the number of mass shootings is difficult due to varying definitions and factors. A true assessment would require equal parameters while excluding criminal shootings and domestic violence. Excluding terrorist events is equally politicized as several shootings by Muslims during the Obama era were labeled as workplace violence. Most media reacts by politicizing tragedy in order to advance a partisan agenda, or to react against a political agenda.
According to this definition, there have been a total of 251 mass shootings in 2019, or an average of 1.2 mass shootings per day. 979 people were shot and of those people, 246 have died. The vast majority of these shootings were crime-related.
In its simplest form, Mass shootings are defined as incidents involving multiple victims of firearm-related violence. Most statistics include incidents with three or more victims with some including incidents with four or more. This definition does not take into account the motive behind the attack.
Any violence is reprehensible and any mass shooting is horrific but the politicization by the media of the recent back-to-back shootings in Dayton and El Paso that left a total of at least 29 people dead demands an objective look at the statistical reality. Policy change and legislation should be undertaken in a manner that seeks solutions rather than in an emotional flurry that can exacerbate the problem.

This far exceeds any criticism President Obama received in the wake of mass shootings. Trump critics might claim that there were far fewer shootings during Obama’s administration, blaming the rise in attacks on Trump. In fact, Obama’s presidency marked a sharp rise in mass shootings which seemed to pass unnoticed by the mainstream media.
Just to clarify for everyone in 1965 violent crime was abut 200/100,000 and in 2013 it was 368/100k that is an 80%+ increase in 50 years...nothing to ignore, and we can thank the War.
BTW, the tremendous increase in crime is due directly to increased rates of illegitimacy and divorce that started in the 1960's. Children who grow up in stable two parent families tend to grow up to be law abiding citizens.

In 1960 there were 86.1 aggravated assaults for every 100,000 people. In 1965 that number was 111.3 per 100,000 people. In 1995 it had risen to 418.3 per 100,000.
Wade was enacted had to do with the fact that there were far fewer unwanted children being brought into our society and the world at large, and thus fewer people to act out their free-floating hostilities and aggressions.

We are NOT safer than we have been in the past and it's not even close. In 2010 it had dropped to 252.3 which is still almost three times higher than in 1960. And this is in spite of the ever increasing amounts of video surveillance, armed guards, gated communities, CCW permits, an extremely high incarceration rate and the fact that people avoid certain high crime areas.

One of the top culprits was social media, which led to immediate, and often intemperate, reactions, followed by counter-reactions from the other side. There were only about 17 million Twitter users in 2009, Obama's first year in office; by 2011, there were 118 million. (There are now more than 330 million users.) Reporters and political activists were early adopters of Twitter, making it a more political environment than a representative sample of the population would have created. There was also the fact that a politician had been injured, making the shooter's motivation appear political. And the context, in the wake of a bitterly fought election in which the House changed hands, contributed as well. Finally, there was the fact that mass shootings were becoming an increasingly regular part of American life. Just as everything else in society was becoming politicized, mass shootings were as well.
Two shootings in the final 15 months of the Obama administration would have enormous political implications for both Obama's legacy and the 2016 election to succeed him. Both were carried out by radicalized Muslims and played into the narrative of lone-wolf terrorism rather than the recurrent problem of "workplace violence" or other types of mass shootings.
