Score Differential. The difference between a player's adjusted gross score and the Course Rating, reflecting the Slope Rating and the playing conditions calculation. It is the numerical value attributed to a score achieved on a golf course on a specific day that is posted into the player's scoring record.

The Differential is the difference between a player's adjusted gross score and the USGA Course Rating of the course on which the score was made, multiplied by 113, and then the total is divided by the USGA Slope Rating from the tees played rounded off to one decimal place.

According to the USGA you must cut your 18 hole handicap index in half. You always round this number up to the nearest 10th. Then you use the 9 hole slope rating from the tees you play to calculate your handicap. So your 9 hole handicap would be 21.2.
