Tabs are read like sentences in a book - read them from left to right, across the page, dropping down to the next line only when you've reached the end of the previous. Play the notes and chords in sequence as you read them from left to right.
Read tabs from left to right, just like you would read a book. Once you've gotten to the end of the “line,” you'll move to the next line, starting again left to right. Single notes will be represented by one number on one string. If you see stacked numbers, you'll play them simultaneously—it's a chord.
Label the topmost fret as "1," the second as "2," the third as "3," and so on. If you see "0" listed on your fingerpicking tab, pluck the string without pressing down on any of the frets. For example, if you see "0" listed on the A string, then you'd pluck the A string without holding down the string on any fret.

In formal Guitar TAB, you may also notice a curved line over the top of the slide, this is a reminder that you only pick the first note of the slide. If there isn't a curved line, it means to pick both notes.

Now think horizontally. The metal dividers on the front of your guitar create separate sections called frets. The fret closest to the headstock is fret number 1. The frets increase in number the further away from the headstock you go. You’ll need to know where your frets are to understand what notes a tab is instructing you to play.

(A hammer on is when you are moving UP a note and a pull off is where you are moving DOWN). Sometimes they are written with either a curved line or as 2h4 or 4p2 .
