It’s the end of 2016 and, like many of you, I am in a reflective mood. Five years ago, I completed my undergraduate business degree and shortly thereafter commenced my professional career. I started out working in a HR department of an underground coal mining company. This was in the height of Australia’s mining boom in a thriving business.

1. You need to learn to be an Influencer

An HSE Professional is more than just the sum of their own particular efforts, in fact, the only way that you can truly succeed in this profession is by inspiring action and effort in others. To do this well, you need to develop and finely tune your emotional intelligence and communication skills.

4. If you are not valued then you should leave

If you are looking to push your career forward it is important for you to find the kind of opportunities that will advance you as a HSE professional, A big part of this is identifying career ‘dead ends’ and avoiding them. I spent a year working for one particular employer when in retrospect, I really should have just walked out the door on day one.

5. Develop a 5 year plan

Back in 2011 when I first finished university I really didn’t have much of a clue what I wanted to do professionally or where I wanted to go. It is only when you look back that you recognise how significant the influence that pure chance or happenstance has on your career trajectory, as it does with any other aspect of your life direction.

6. Keep Learning

As I mentioned before about my 5 year plan I had developed a reasonably long list of qualifications and certifications that I had intended to complete. I have marked a fair bit off on that list, however in the HSE profession there is always some further piece of paper to get. If you are just starting out I suggest you do the same.

7. Get a Mentor

I have been lucky enough to have worked with some fantastic Safety leaders over the course of my early career and I have learned a great deal from both colleagues and supervisors past and present.

8. Networking (Even if you hate it)

If the prospect of going to a networking event, sticking on your name tag and putting on a big phony smile, is enough to get you in a cold sweat, trust me you are not alone! This is exactly how I still feel and I am sure many other people in the room will be feeling the same way.

Before you are recognized as a Health and safety professional and be able to compete for the limited opportunities, you have to follow a particular career path. Your career path will either enhance your progress in the profession or delay your progress.
