Long before the club opened on July 4, 2006, a 40-foot scaffolding was placed over where the 18th green was imagined by course architects Tom Kite and Bob Cupp.
Ten years ago, the land on which Liberty now stands was a toxic moonscape of corroded oil tanks, contaminated soil, and rusting warehouses. The site has been home to a major Standard Oil refinery, a WWII munitions storage facility, an Italian internment camp and, most recently, an industrial wasteland.

Hosting the Barclays tournament this week, it was once just a landfill with a view. Paul Fireman, then the chairman of Reebok International, describes his 1998 decision to buy the stinking, toxic landfill that is now Liberty National Golf Course as a "moment of insanity."
The course was designed by Bob Cupp and World Golf Hall of Famer Tom Kite. The two first began working on the golf course in 1992. They immediately knew it would be a challenge. “The first time we showed up here, it was a nightmare,” Cupp, who passed away in 2016, said 10 years ago.
Today, Liberty National has 100 members, and the Firemans could corral many more, as golf fans around the globe get their first glimpse of the course when coverage of the Barclays Tournament begins on Aug.

Source of the Purse Money Most of the purse money comes from the various television networks that broadcast PGA Tour events. As of 2012, television rights money provides 60 percent of each tournament's purse, according to an article in Forbes.
In 2013, Adam Scott edged a group including Woods, Justin Rose and Gary Woodland by one shot and Jim Furyk and Phil Mickelson by two. And in 2019, Patrick Reed won an event that saw Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Rose and Scott all finish in the top 10.

In the ensuing years, Liberty National has found its way, thriving with a robust membership, twice hosting the PGA Tour’s prestigious Barclays Tournament, in 2009 and 2013, and helping to reinvigorate a depressed part of New Jersey.
Dan would bring prospective members and golf dignitaries for a tour and always have them scale the wood and take in views of the Statue of Liberty, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and Manhattan .

Like his father, Dan has early memories of golf as well, memories formed by watching the Masters on Sunday as a family, memories of a game passed down through the generations.

Tom Kite and Bob Cupp, who’d spent more than 15 years as the senior designer for Jack Nicklaus, first met in 1988 when they were both hired to redesign Baltimore Country Club’s West Course. It was the start of a fruitful partnership that collaborated on several courses, included Liberty National.

The par-3 14th is often talked about when coming to Liberty National. It's a fine hole -- playing to a max of 150 yards -- the small green a chore to hit when the winds are whipping about. The back right pin placement is quite dicey -- very small and tough to hold without the best of execution. It's also a scenic hole because the green is the nearest point to the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor.
One player suggested it was a good idea the Statue of Liberty had her back to the course because she would not want to look at it. Given the feedback -- no less than 74 alterations were carried out on 15 of the 18 holes. Five greens were entirely rebuilt -- six others got major reconstruction.

The 11th is a quality long par-3 and can play to a max of 250 yards. The split fairway 12th is a strategic hole -- the left side provides the easier angle to the flag -- although the right side is more open to reach from the tee. The par-3 14th is often talked about when coming to Liberty National.
Water hazards were created and they insert their role on a number of holes. The mounding on the course was also created to provide hole separation and serves a role near several of the putting surfaces.
