It does not affect the student's GPA (grade point average). Although students may be reluctant to have a “W” on their transcript, sometimes “W” stands for Wisdom. Withdrawing from one class may make success in other classes manageable and allow your student to end the semester with a strong GPA.

Important Definitions. Course Drop: Removal of a course from your schedule prior to the end of the first week of class. Course Withdrawal: Any removal of a course from your schedule after the end of week one using the online form provided.
If your school determines that your withdrawal from a class changes your student status, or impedes your Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), they may reduce your financial aid for the current session or disqualify you from aid in the future.
Dropping a class with financial aid won't necessarily affect your FAFSA and financial aid award. If you're taking extra classes, for instance, you could probably afford to remove one from your schedule.
Stony Brook students do not get to keep their @stonybrook.edu email accounts for life, but DoIT has worked with University Advancement/Alumni Relations to establish a separate @alumni.stonybrook.edu Google Apps domain for SB graduates.

If you cannot withdraw from a class because it will put you below 12 credits, you might want to consider the G/P/NC option. Talk to your professor about how you are doing in a course before deciding on an option because you might be doing better than you think!
It is important to discuss the G/P/NC and Withdrawal options for any class with an advisor before making that decision; however, this is especially important for the prehealth prerequisites. You should avoid a pattern of such remarks on your transcript.
If you are a TAP recipient, note that if you earn a "P" in a course, it may affect your eligibility to receive TAP in future terms. The G/P/NC option cannot be selected for repeated courses. If you are registered as a full time student, you may withdraw from a class.
Students who take a leave of absence after classes begin who have a cumulative GPA lower than 2.0 and/or students who have withdrawn or taken a leave of absence in a previous semester must wait one full Summer/Fall or Winter/Spring term to re-enroll in classes. Students taking a leave of absence in the fall term are eligible to return the following summer term. Students taking a leave of absence in the spring term are eligible to return the following winter term. You are required to meet with an academic advisor before re-enrolling. In the fall and spring semesters, you have until 4 p.m. on the last day of classes to withdraw from the entire semester and receive a withdrawal (W) in all courses on your academic record. For winter and summer withdrawal deadlines, check the academic calendar .
After the add/drop period ends, and through the end of the 9th week of the fall or spring semester, you may drop a course (s) and receive a withdrawal (W) on your academic record as long as you maintain a minimum of 12 credits. A “W” has no GPA impact and you do not earn credit for the course.
If you register for more than 19 credits, you will be billed a $20 overload fee. If you wish to enroll in more than 19, but no more than 23 credits in the fall or spring semester, and have at least a 2.5-2.99 cumulative GPA, you may submit a petition to request an overload.
Underload. In the fall and spring semesters, if you are a full-time student, you are required to maintain a minimum of 12 credits. If you are a full-time student and need to register for less than 12 credits, you may petition for an underload.
Non-attendance in a course (s), the difficulty of course material, volume of work, or your academic performance in the course (s) as factors by themselves are not considered sufficient reasons to request a late withdrawal. The factors, individually and/or collectively, must be linked to a specific situation (s) beyond your control.
Approval of a petition for a late withdrawal does not result in changes of financial liability. If you are approved for a late withdrawal of a class (es), you are responsible for all tuition and fees for that class (es).
Important Note: Undergraduate Division of Undergraduate Education will not review your petition unless you have a ZERO BALANCE due to the University. Please check SOLAR and verify that you do not have an outstanding balance due before submitting your petition.
