“A withdrawal will be on the transcripts but does not affect GPA.” Croskey also noted that there aren't any limits to how many classes one can drop because they don't go on the transcript. Withdrawals though are limited and can look bad if there are too many on a student's transcript.

Withdrawals (W’s) are for when students want to drop a class after the deadline. These must be requested by the student because they need a “serious and compelling” reason as defined by the college; see this website for a list of acceptable reasons.
Academic Policy requires that all requests to withdraw from a course must be submitted no later than the last day of instruction of that term. If circumstances clearly beyond your control prevented you from meeting this deadline, you may appeal for consideration. Your appeal should be submitted to the Registrar’s Office and include:
During the first 60% of the enrollment period, a student "earns" Title IV funds in direct proportion to the length of time he or she remains enrolled. A student who remains enrolled beyond the 60% point earns all aid for the period.
In almost every instance, the fee refund will be less than the total Return of aid amount. As a result, when a student withdraws, a balance will be created on their student account for the difference between the fee refund and the Return of aid amount. The student is responsible for paying this balance. 2.
Students enrolled in classes that are canceled, postponed, combined, or have dates and/or times changed may request a full refund or transfer of course fees to other classes. Students may request a refund or fee transfer in person or by calling (415) 405-7700. For canceled courses, refunds are processed automatically.
Upon a financial aid recipient's withdrawal from school, SF State is required by the federal government to calculate, collect, and return a portion of federal financial aid grant or loan funds received by the student.
Transfer of fees is permitted for adding and dropping if the transaction is submitted in person on one add/drop form, or by phone to SF State Extended Learning by the Drop Deadline. (See Calendar & Deadlines for add/drop deadlines.)
