Basil - The short answer to your question is no - there is no way to gracefully or automatically get the data moved. If it is the same instance, you may want to explore basically making the new teachers like parents of the student so that they could see the progress in the other class.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful & thorough response. I've actually looked at the code inside the backup/restore libraries, and everything there, unfortunately, is not very customization friendly. And there does not seem to be anything that will offer per-user backup.

Maybe this entry in the Modules and Plugins database ( MyCopy) will help. It seems to allow you to take a per-user backup. As an administrator, you've have to login as each user in turn to perform the task - very time-consuming, but at least the job will get done .
