The NYC Food Protection exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and lasts exactly one (1) hour. In order to successfully earn your certificate, you must score AT LEAST a 70%.
The final exam has 50 multiple choice questions and a 60-minute time limit. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass the exam. CIFS students also have unlimited attempts at writing the Food Handler exam included with every course enrolment.
15-hourThe Classroom training option is a 15-hour course beginning on Monday and ending on Friday with classes lasting 3 hours each day. To qualify for the Food Protection Certificate, you must pay the $114 fee, attend all 15 hours and pass the final exam given on the last day of the course.
The certificate never expires. There is no need to repeat the course. (Under special circumstances, the Department may require individuals to re-take the course.)
40 questionThe ServSafe Food Handler Exam is an untimed 40 question test. To receive a ServSafe Food Handler certificate, you must score better than 75% (i.e., answer more than 30 questions correctly).

If you have lost or damaged your Food Protection Certificate, you may get a replacement if you have taken the Food Protection Course and passed the final exam within the last 10 years. If you took the class more than 10 years ago you must retake the course and pass the final exam.
