Practice Good Habits

One of the secrets to streamlining your life is getting rid of clutter -- keep the devices you depend on and put the rest away.

Consolidate Your Gear

One of the barriers to streamlining your life is clutter. Clearing clutter from your life can help you create an ordered routine that gives you more free time to do the things you enjoy. And while clutter comes in all shapes and sizes, technology is a major contributor to the problem.

1. Delegate one task

Very few things that you do at work actually have to be done by you. I guarantee there is something on your list this week that you could hand off to someone else and free up that time for you to do something more impactful.

2. De-clutter your workspace (or fridge, bathroom, etc)

You don’t have to live with clutter. Clutter slows you down and makes your world a less nice place to be, which makes it harder for you to do the things you want and need to do.

3. Create a system for a regular task

We all fall into inefficient habits, and most of the time, we don’t even notice. Maybe there’s something you always end up doing at the last minute, or a way that you’re storing a piece of information you need that is always hard to find.

4. Cut down your communication (just a little bit)

In other words, become just a little less available. Try putting your phone in airplane mode for an hour during the day while you get some focused work done, or close your email a few times throughout the day so that you aren’t constantly aware of the flow of messages in.

5. Clean out your bag

We love this one because it can make such a big difference in your daily life, and takes almost no time to do. Every once in a while — say, every two weeks or once a month — empty out and organize the bag that you carry every day.

6. Plan out your week every Sunday night

Monday morning isn’t really anyone’s favorite part of the week. Why? Because we’re usually inundated with other people’s requests that have come in over the weekend and first thing in the morning, plus we are facing down the week ahead and trying to get a grip on how best to get started ourselves.

8. Unsubscribe from as many emails as possible

We all lose a ton of time to email every day. Luckily, most of us also interact with plenty of emails every day that we absolutely don’t have to, and it is possible to stop wasting time on them pretty easily.

How to make a to-do list?

Planning. 1. Create a to-do list the night before. If you must, in the morning first thing. 2. If you create weekly or monthly goals, keep them to a minimum. Eliminating the less important will help you focus on the most critical. 3. Take the time to plan your most important goals for the remainder of the year.

Can you catch up while waiting?

You can catch up while you’re waiting (for anything). When you find yourself in a waiting mode, you can sit and relax, do something a little mindless or be a little productive. There is nothing wrong with a fun game or social media browsing. But, why not use the extra time to read that book you want to finish or catch up on critical mail? Just be sure that you always have what you need at your fingertips. Because you never know when you’ll find yourself in a line!

Simplify your possessions

Physical clutter almost always turns into mental clutter. If you’re serious about streamlining your life, this is the best place to start. Once you get the clutter under control, it will be a lot easier to simplify the other areas of your life as well.

Make lists for everything as you go

For example, your grocery list. Keep a notepad out on your kitchen counter or maybe a piece of paper taped to the inside of a cabinet, and then as you run out of milk or other necessities, simply add them to your list.

Set up routines

Routines don’t sound like the most exciting thing to take on, but they really can do wonders for your productivity level. There are cleaning routines, morning routines, workout routines, etc. I think the best approach is to pick one type of routine to help you simplify your schedule and some tasks that you need to accomplish.

Automate

This is a great way to save some precious brain power and energy on remembering to pay monthly bills. Automate as many bill payments as possible so you don’t have to fret about paying anything late (or worse, actually paying late and then having to pay for a late fee!).

Create to-do lists

Create a to-do list at night for the next day so you’re never left wondering “what exactly do I need to do today?” Take the planning portion out of your morning so that you can just dive in and start tackling your to-dos and your life will become so much easier! The biggest thing is to figure out your top 3 priority tasks for the day, and try to tackle the most challenging one first.

Delegate

If there’s something a family member or friend is able and willing to help you with, don’t be afraid to ask for help if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed. This is something I am still working on because I really hate asking for help of any kind, but life is so much easier and less stressful when you accept help as you need it!
