How does the F-18 virtual cockpit work?

Apr 23, 2019 · ) i have takan set but can't set course correctly, pls advice tq...: Runway 09 will align approx with 090°, 07 with 07 with 070°, etc. You can find the exact runway alignment from the F10 map using the 'ruler' tool - this will give it's TRUE direction i.e. Kobuleti RWY 07 is aligned with 70°T

How do I fly the F-18 in FSX?

FSX: Accel F-18 Cockpit Manual, pg 5 3.) Using the Head-Up Display (HUD) The HUD on the F-18 was one of the first developed to serve as a ‘Primary flight display’ and as such provides the majority of information you will need to visually fly the F-18 in FSX. Switching the cockpit to 2D mode causes the HUD to be superimposed over the screen.

How do you use the HUD on a F-18?

Feb 12, 2019 · Quote. In addition , when pressing and holding the course setting switch (in either direction) the same thing happens. Sometimes it will provide a course heading line across my HSI and sometimes it won't. The TACAN or waypoint could be too far off the screen of your HSI. You could have forgotten to box TACAN (or waypoint).

How do you set the course on a CRS switch?

Nov 30, 2019 · Donor. Posted November 30, 2019 (edited) Not sure if you know this, but in real world, the F/A-18s are not certified for GPS navigation in civilian airspace (unless that has changed in the last 18 months). All IFR filed flight plans must be based off of VOR radials and distances, even though the aircraft internal nav databases are quite complete.

What is the HUD on an F-18?

If you look out the front canopy, you will see the Head-Up Display (HUD) which gives flight data such as speed, altitude, etc.

Where is the flight path vector?

In the center of the display, and moving around, is the flight path vector. Wherever the flight path vector sits in the HUD is where the aircraft is headed regardless of pitch, attitude, etc. There are several horizontal lines representing the pitch ladder.

What is TACAN in FSX?

TACtical Air Navigation, or TACAN, is a more accurate version of VOR/DME navigation that provides range and bearing information for military aviation. TCN Mode places the UFC into a screen where you can enter VOR frequencies as either standard frequencies or TACAN channels. The radio is smart enough to figure out your intentions. FSX doesn’t use TCN information, so all information is relayed in standard VOR/DME format.

What is NDB radio?

A non-directional beacon (NDB) is a radio transmitter at a known location, used as an aviation navigational aid. As the name implies, the signal transmitted does not include inherent directional information (in contrast to VOR and TACAN). NDB signals follow the curvature of the earth, so they can be received at much greater distances at lower altitudes, a major advantage over VOR. However, the NDB signal is affected more by atmospheric conditions, mountainous terrain, coastal refraction and electrical storms, particularly at long range. NDBs operate on a frequency between 190 kHz and 1750 kHz (190 kHz and 535 kHz in North America). Each NDB is identified by a one, two, or three-letter Morse code call-sign.

How come sometimes my TACAN will show up on HSI and sometimes it doesn't (even though it will give me heading information)

Nealius

If you don't have X or Y channel properly selected sometimes it will only give bearing info but no distance. Otherwise if it disappears than something is blocking the signal e.g. a mountain.

Mind to share your mission so we might take a look in the ME if it's something there as well?

Nealius

Yeah, we might not be able to tell without looking at the mission. The station could not be associated with the proper unit, or there might be something up with the "Bearing" tick box (whose function I still don't understand).

Doum76

You may be out of range. When it starts spinning circles and I know I have the proper TACAN selected, I'll turn it off and wait for several minutes then turn it back on.

OP said he was flying over the ocan, no terrain masking and still no Tacan at 40 nm which is odd, i never had any issues getting a Tacan signal around that range on flat terrain, i do have issues when i get on Aerobatic Online server, taking from the base which has Hornets, hiden below some mountains and the Carrier is about 85 nm away, i then get the spinning Tacan, but once i get at 40 nm i do not have a single issue..
