How to Request a Course Substitution.
A course substitution request is made when a student desires to substitute one course for a required course when a clear relationship exists between the two. This form may also be used for a complete replacement of a Liberty course requirement. Make your selection. Either the second or third option, based on your request
The replacement course should fulfill at least 2/3 of the credit requirement of the required course in the program. A graduate course is not able to be applied to an undergraduate program.

A course substitution is the process of receiving formal approval from an academic division to use one or more courses to satisfy specific course requirements in a major for an Associate Degree or Associate Degree for Transfer at Fullerton College.
General Information A substitution is when a specific course or requirement is being met by applying the course indicated to replace the requirement. Substitutions cannot be made for General Education Requirements (GER).

School of Engineering (SOE) Majors: For its major courses and other required courses found on the right-side of the Degree Completion Plan, this school utilizes a different course substitution form and process.
A lower-level course substituting for an upper-level requirement is not able to count toward the number of upper-level hours required. Changing programs or breaking enrollment may nullify the request.
A course waiver is an exemption from a required course, which may be granted due to prior training, education, work experience, or with substantial documentation for a disability-related reason. Students will still need to take a class that fulfills the missing credits.
When I was in my previous major, students had the option between taking a discrete mathematics class or a discrete structures class to fulfill one of their major requirements. I chose to take the discrete structures class to fulfill that requirement and passed the class.
In my previous major, the discrete structures and discrete mathematics courses were treated as course equivalencies for students, so I was able to show that these courses were similar enough that other departments accepted them as equivalencies.
The first official step to take when figuring out how to request a course substitution or course waiver in college is to go to the college registrar or department for your major and locate the course substitution/course waiver form.
Once a student determines that they have a case for filing a course substitution or waiver, they will need to meet with their department advisor or send an email detailing their request. In my case, I sent an email that stated why I was requesting a course substitution and that listed out the shared topics between the two classes.
In some cases, the student may have to contact the dean of their department in addition to contacting their advisor to determine if they can get a course substitution or course waiver.
A course waiver exempts a student from taking a required class, though they will still need to take a different class to fulfill the credit requirements
Follow the steps below to obtain a course substitution: 1 Gather sufficient documentation and justification to warrant a substitution. Course substitution requests must include a description of the course to be substituted and explanation of how it meets the content and spirit of the requirement. 2 Review your documentation with an academic advisor. Work with the advisor to complete the Petition for Course Substitution form . If the advisor believes the request merits further consideration, your student's petition will be forwarded to the appropriate academic dean.
The Academic Deans will make a decision on the request (usually within 1 week) and inform the Office of the College Registrar. You will receive an email from the College Registrar once your petition has been received and processed.

A student is expected to satisfy all University degree requirements (such as General Education, First-Year Seminar and Engagement, United States Cultures and International Cultures, Writing Across the Curriculum) that were in effect when the student first scheduled a class after his/her admission or most recent re-enrollment as a degree candidate.
The course to be substituted should be in the same area as the required course or in a closely related area.
When working on your academic plans, discuss the possibility of a substitution with an adviser. Ideally, permission for a substitution should be obtained before you enroll in the course you wish to substitute.

Before submission of this electronic substitution request, the details of the request should first be discussed with your primary advisor. Complete the request and the mandatory detailed justification section with applicable information. A clear and detailed justification will expedite the review process.

An Approval of Credits to Be Earned at Another School (PDF) must be submitted prior to enrolling at another institution. Courses taken at two-year institutions cannot be used to substitute for 3000 or higher level courses. Course substitutions are not permitted in situations where Academic Forgiveness has been previously applied.

However, sometimes it is appropriate to substitute a course taken at NOVA or a transferred course in for a required course.
