How to Restrict Students From Viewing Course After End Date 1. From within you Canvas course, scroll downward and click Settings at the bottom left. 2. Then scroll to Restrict students from viewing course after end date and check the box to enable.
To restrict students from accessing the course after the set course end date, click the Restrict students from viewing course after course end date checkbox [8]. If the course end date is blank, students can access the course after the term end date. The default checkbox settings are passed down from the account level.
Restricting student access does not apply to users who do not have course enrollments and are accessing the course through Public or Institution visibility options. In Course Navigation, click the Settings link. Courses may be assigned to the Default Term or a specific term [1].
Depending on your admin, the student access setting may vary in your course. If your admin has locked one or more settings, locked settings are grayed out and cannot be changed. If your admin has not locked one or more settings, you can change the settings for your course as necessary.
Once a course is published, the course displays an invitation to join the course. When students join a future course, they can view course content at any time before the course begins.
By default, yes. If you do nothing else in your course after the term end date, students retain view-only access to the course, and your course is moved to the Past Enrollments section of a student's course list.
What happens at the end of the semester? Your course will be "concluded" 2-3 weeks after the end of finals period. This means the content will be in an archival state. You will maintain full read/edit access to the site and students will also have access to your course content for up to 5 years.
In the Global Navigation menu (on left), click Courses and then All Courses. To favorite a course or courses, click the empty star next to each course name to add it to the Courses menu. To hide a course, click the filled star next to each course name to remove it from the Courses menu.
Relock a courseNavigate to the course you want to lock, and from the course navigation menu, select Settings. In the sidebar of the "Settings" screen, click Lock Course:After the page automatically refreshes, your course will be locked and the course end date will be blank.
Select a Home Page, then click Choose and Publish Once you publish your Canvas course site, you do not have to republish it again if you add new content. You only have to publish the site once. You can unpublish the course by going to the Home page and clicking the Unpublish button.
View Unpublished Course While a course is unpublished, students cannot access or participate in the course. When the course material is deemed ready by the designer, instructor, or administrator, it may be published. These courses appear in the Future Enrollments section of the Courses menu.
Disable Student Access to FilesClick the Settings link from the course navigation on left.Click the Navigation tap.Click the Files options button and click Disable.
Once student interaction on your course is no longer needed (only viewing), setting an end date will manually 'archive' your course and remove it from your, and your students', dashboards. The course will still be accessible in archive format by clicking on courses and viewing Past enrolments.

In Canvas, you can set modules to be locked until a specific date. This assists you in managing the course content by automating student access to content in your course.
To put it simply, the “lock” icon means that Canvas won't give you the option to calculate your overall grade. If you'd like to do so, you'll need to use sources like Roger Hub to calculate grades, or you can do it manually but the former is more convenient to use.
There isn't a password capability, but there is a way you can use Module requirements to keep things "locked".
These restrictions include student access to courses before or after the term or course participation dates. By default, course participation dates are limited to term dates.
However, when the student restriction for the course participation start date is enabled, students cannot view a link to the course until the start date, even if the course is published.
By default, student access checkboxes are not selected, meaning students can view a link to any enrolled future course (after they accept their course invitation) or a concluded course. To retain this default for the entire institution, do not select any checkboxes.
However, when the student restriction for the course end date is enabled, students can no longer view the course in the Courses list after the course has concluded.
When you restrict students from accessing courses before the start date, you can also restrict students from viewing future courses in the Enrollments list. If you don't want students to see they have been enrolled in a future course, select the Restrict students from viewing future courses in enrollments list checkbox [1].
We only recommend using this setting if an instructor wants to stop students from accessing Canvas sites after a semester end. The default access-setting for past Canvas sites is to allow students to view a course in a read-only mode, which means they can see content and download most files but they cannot take actions (e.g., submit an assignment).
Please email Courseware Support at [email protected] if you have any questions about access-restricting settings in Canvas.
There may be times when you want to extend the date that students can access your course. You may want to do this because:
By default, students cannot access your course after the end date. However, this tutorial walks you through how to change the course details to allow students access to your course after it has ended, according to the information from the registrar’s office.
When there are cases where one or more students (not all) needs extended access to the course, and you do not want all students to have that extended access, you will need to create a new section, add those students to that section, and adjust the course settings. This tutorial walks you through how to set this up.
You may assign an Incomplete grade to students when they warrant the additional time to complete coursework due to situations beyond their control. They may only be awarded when a student’s grade otherwise would have been an “F.” If assigning an Incomplete (grade of “I”) an expiration date MUST be entered.
