The Terrova was the standard for high-end trolling motors for several years. However, times have changed, and it’s now considered a mid-range trolling motor that delivers a lot of value for the $1,999.99 MSRP. While reading my Minn Kota Terrova review, you will see why the Terrova is still a viable alternative to other bow mount trolling motors.
So the shaft might be indestructible, but other pieces are not and will break on impact! The Terrova has owned the market of mid-range trolling motors for several years now and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. That doesn’t mean there are no alternatives worth checking out.

Spot-Lock is available on select Riptide Terrova, Riptide PowerDrive and Riptide Ulterra trolling motors.
So is i-Pilot the same as Spot-Lock? The answer is no. The i-Pilot is an entire GPS built onto a remote. Spot-lock is a single feature within the i-Pilot system.

i-Pilot Link allows your Minn Kota and Humminbird to communicate with each other to change the way you fish. With Link, you can take command of your motor from the wireless remote or your Humminbird.
What is the difference between i-Pilot and i-Pilot Link. The i-Pilot system is a self-contained GPS system that is operated via a wireless remote. The i-Pilot Link system has everything the i-Pilot models has but also has the ability to communicate with a Humminbird fish finder.
A bow mount trolling motor is another tool to catch more fish. If you buy a trolling motor, even if it has all the latest and greatest features, that doesn’t help you catch more fish, then you waste your money.
As I’ve mentioned previously, anglers were initially reluctant to mount the Terrova on the front of their boat. However, once they discovered all the benefits the features offered, the motor quickly became one of the most popular trolling motors ever and set the standard in the industry for several years.
You don’t have to take my word for the Terrova being a middle-of-the-road trolling motor. Most people enjoy their Minn Kota and would buy another Minn Kota product, but as with any product, you have the individuals who do not like it.
The Terrova has owned the market of mid-range trolling motors for several years now and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. That doesn’t mean there are no alternatives worth checking out. I consider the following trolling motors direct competitors to the Minn Kota Terrova.
While there are legitimate arguments against the Terrova, you can see why from our Minn Kota Terrova review, it’s still an excellent trolling motor for the weekend angler because of the standard features that few other trolling motors have within this price range.
So the install was quite intense on my trout boat. I had to buy pressure treated wood to create a shim so it would clear my bow railing. Also something they don't tell you is that you'll need to buy the circuit breaker because they don't include one.
I purchased my Terrova on a new boat in April 2020. The second time I attempted to use my Terrova, the deploy stow feature broke. With some effort I was able to deploy and stow my trolling motor. Then on my next attempt to use my trolling motor I noticed that there was water running out of the control head each time I deployed my trolling motor.
Was going to replace my old with a new one, All I really wanted was autopilot and a foot pedal. Sure, the copilot was nice at times bt I have a 17' boat with an 18' foot pedal cord so no biggie. Saw they finally improved the stow and deploy after how many years? So I stepped up. Turns out stow and deploy is the only improvement.
Sunk $3000 into my 112 thrust system for my boat. Season 1 (got very little use) it was great, couldn't say enough nice things about it. Season 2, missed walleye run because main board was dead. replaced by Minn Kota without issue but still missed my fishing season. Season 3 worked great with very limited use. Season 4 main board dead again.
An honest review. I just replaced the 36 volt Terrova with the 2018 Ulterra. My Terrova did fine but the spot lock, anchor mode was complete junk. It wouldn't hold within 20ft of a marked spot. I had to manually keep the boat in a certain spot. I tried everything. I figured I would purchase the Ulterra and see if the anchor mode was any better.
I purchased the 55lbs, 45" shaft iPILOT w/autopilot, in April 2017 and mounted it to a small 12' V Hull. I have used this T/M over 100 X's between April 2017 and June 2018
