Restrictions are enrollment limitations put upon a course. Most commonly, courses are restricted to certain class levels (junior/senior only, for example) or to certain majors. Restrictions may also be put in place to manage seat capacity.
Submit a request via the UC San Diego Course Pre-authorization System. (Be sure to include the Section ID number of the course for which you seek approval in the justification area. Requests without a Section ID included will not be considered).

Generally, there are three circumstances under which course petitions for HDS major or minor credit will be considered: Transfer Coursework, Study Abroad Courses, and Newly-created UCSD classes.
Petitions are reviewed once a month.
Narrative Syllabus (if available) that covers content and lecture topics (not just the course grading requirements).
Students may receive credit for up to four (4) courses taken at an abroad university.
Pre-approval only: HDS has indicated the course appears to qualify. However final approval will not be granted until the full syllabus from the specific term the course is being taken is provided, along with relevant course assignments, essays and tests. Please retain all course information. Note that ALL STUDY ABROAD is pre-approval only before attending an abroad program.
Along with the official petition, students should submit as much information as possible detailing the content of the course (e.g. syllabus, course description, notes, coursework, etc.).
Students are encouraged to submit as many courses that are potentially applicable to HDS for pre-approval approval as possible. The Division of Biological Sciences strictly enforces the requirements set forth for all biology majors. Therefore, students who wish to utilize a course that is not prescribed for their biology major must request an exception by submitting an Undergraduate Student Petition [PDF] .

Repeating a course in which the student earned two non-passing grades. Exceptions to Academic Senate Policies and/or deadlines due to extenuating circumstances.
Students may submit a double major petition after they have reached 90 units. Petitions must be approved by both academic departments before being submitted to TMC Academic Advising.
Students who will not be completing 35 of their final 45 units at UC San Diego (due to studying abroad or taking courses at another institution) must petition the Senior Residency requirement prior to Graduation.
Students in good academic standing may request to repeat a course in which they have received a non-passing grade (D, F or NP) two times.
Thurgood Marshall College accepts GE petitions for students who wish to utilize courses from other institutions, or courses not listed on the General Education page, that encompass the philosophy of the Marshall GEs. All petitions must be submitted using the Undergraduate Student Petition Form [PDF].
All coursework taken abroad must be petitioned in order to utilize the course for Marshall GE requirements.
