If a student can't enroll on SPIRE (various reasons), special permission is required. This is handled by requesting an override through the form linked to from the individual pages below. The override form will generally open several weeks after the registration period starts and will close at the beginning of the semester.

In general, CS Majors should not be requesting overrides, unless there is a legitimate reason specified in the Chart below (See FAQ). Informatics Major requests will be reviewed, but decisions may be delayed, depending on the course.

Overrides are permissions granted by a faculty to a student, to register for a course where. the student would have encountered a restriction preventing registration. Overrides. granted do not register the student for a course it allows the student to subsequently. register without receiving an error message.
Course Repeat Petition A course may be repeated a second time, for a total of three times, only with prior permission of the academic dean of the school or college in which the student is enrolled.

Withdrawing from a Course Depending on what time during the semester you want to withdraw from a course, you can drop in SPIRE or petition your Academic Dean. If you need to withdraw from a course during the semester you may drop the course in SPIRE, with no record, during the add/drop period.
Repeated Courses The grades received in both the original course and the repeated enrollment will remain on the student's record.

If a student originally passes a course with a grade of C-, CD, D+ or D, and fails the course on a repeated enrollment, the student will lose the credit previously earned toward graduation requirements (including degree credit, and satisfaction of General Education, college, or major requirements).
Schools can't deny a diploma to qualified graduates arbitrarily or under rules that are not reasonable. If a student successfully finished the academic requirements and sat for final exams, courts generally find it unfair for schools to withhold a high school diploma for last-minute disciplinary problems.
Students in their first semester at UMass are NOT eligible for a credit overload. When to Use This Form: Fall/Spring: If you wish to take more than 19 credits. Summer: If you wish to take more than 16 credits total for the term, or 8 credits in any session.
Students whose cumulative average is 2.000 or above, but whose semester average is less than 2.000, will be sent a warning indicating that they should consult with their academic dean. C. Academic Probation. Students whose cumulative average falls below 2.000 will be placed on Academic Probation.
“A drop from the course is usually done early in the semester and has no impact on the student's grade, GPA or transcript,” Croskey says. However, students should be very aware of deadlines, financial aid requirements and course timelines before dropping a class.
ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT – The grade of “DR” (Deferred Report) is to be assigned when academic dishonesty is suspected.
In the SPIRE Menu, go to Enrollment > Drop Classes. The Select classes to drop page will open, listing all the classes for which you are currently registered or waitlisted. Alternately, on your Student Center SPIRE Home page, select Enrollment: Drop Classes from the other academic... drop-down list.
Any student writing a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation must register for thesis (699) or dissertation (899) credits prior to filing for the degree. Most graduate programs require a minimum of six (6) thesis and ten (10) dissertation credits.
Academic Dismissal. A graduate student who in any two semesters, consecutive or otherwise, has semester averages of below 2.8 is subject to academic dismissal upon recommendation of the Graduate Program Director and approval by the Dean of the Graduate School. Unsatisfactory or Unreasonable Progress.
If the Dean grants a leave of absence, the student's statute of limitations will be appropriately increased. Graduate students on a leave of absence must maintain continuous enrollment by registering for the Continuous Enrollment course and paying the program fee every semester during their leave.
The Graduate School defines full-time graduate student status as enrollment for nine (9) or more credits; part-time graduate student status is defined as eight (8) or fewer credits; and for financial aid and loan deferment purposes, half-time is defined as six (6) credits in a semester.
A graduate student in a full-time degree program may routinely register for up to sixteen (16) credits each fall and spring semester, nine (9) credits during the summer session, and four (4) credits during the winter session.
Independent Study/Special Problems: Independent work may receive credit as Independent Study or Special Problems courses provided that the work is performed under the guidance of a graduate faculty member and the course is properly recorded as part of the student's registration.
Registration for Continuous Enrollment and payment of a Program Fee does not constitute a leave of absence. A student must formally request a leave of absence by petitioning their Graduate Program Director who, in turn, provides justification for the request to the Graduate Dean.
