One of the biggest criticisms I’ve seen floating around for Mario Maker is that it’s really difficult to find good courses. Creating Better Courses in Super Mario Maker 2

L ike many people in their mid-thirties, I grew up playing Mario games. Much as I adored playing them, I often found myself daydreaming about how I’d create my own Mario.

Tip 1: Build around a single idea

When you first jump into Maker Mode, it’s really tempting (and a lot of fun) to dive in, pick up every object and enemy you can get your sticky fingers on, and fill the screen with them. And while this can be useful for experimentation purposes, it won’t typically make for an enjoyable playing experience.

Tip 2: Experiment!

This might sound like a contradiction to Tip 1, but it really isn’t. Experimentation is really important — you’re not likely to design a perfect course in your very first outing. Even the masters at Nintendo spend a lot of their time experimenting with different ideas; that’s often how they come up with some of their greatest designs.

Tip 3: Play test in person if you can

This is perhaps the single most important tip I can provide. You’ll play a huge variety of courses in Super Mario Maker 2, but what is the common ingredient that all of the really fun ones share?

Play The 100 Mario Challenge

Okay. Hear me out. There is no way around this: to find good Mario courses, you’re going to need to put in some work. I was serious about the “wading through crap” part. But I promise that if you put in some time to build your own curation, you’ll get to a point where you constantly have stuff to play.

Look At The Stars

So, you have a few starred courses from playing the 100 Mario challenge. On the Course World menu, click on your avatar. From there, you should have the option to look at the courses you’ve starred. You’ll want to seek out the creators of the levels you starred—tap their icons.

Find Good Curators

Here’s the thing. Everyone has a different definition of “good.” Some of you may be looking for classic Mario-type levels. Some of you may enjoy levels with a narrative twist. Some of you might like mash-ups, or playing recreations of other series within Mario Maker. Some of you might like gimmick levels.

Play The Bad Courses Anyway

I see the benefit to weeding out the crappy stuff in Mario Maker —you want to spend time with stuff that delights you, after all. But the only way Mario Maker can improve is if everyone is making better courses. You can have a hand in that growth. Yes, you!

1. Create a conducive environment

Clear Conditions is a useful tool in Super Mario Maker 2 that requires players to accomplish certain activities in order to finish your level. Without a Clear Condition, the player may just make it to the flagpole at the conclusion of the stage to complete the level.

2. Night Mode Should Be Enabled

Super Mario Maker 2 introduces a new function called Night Mode. However, gamers will not be able to use the function right now. You’ll have to figure out how to turn it on.

4. Each theme has a distinct function

You may alter the theme of your level in Super Mario Maker 2 to represent five distinct Mario games. Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World New Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario 3D World are among the themes.

5. Go into Story Mode

Okay, most gamers will want to get straight into Super Mario Maker 2’s level creation. That said, you should definitely start with the narrative mode.

6. Maintain a Theme

There will be a deluge of levels created as near-impossible death gauntlets on the internet. You’ll have to stand out if you want your levels to get greater momentum with the internet community. Fortunately, there are a few options available.

9. Encourage the player to progress

It’s not uncommon for fan-made Mario levels to seem frantic and aimless. Keep your players on track to solve this issue.

10. Be wary of leaps of faith

If you want them to take a leap of faith at any point in your level, many players will miss the clue. While visual clues may be useful, there are occasions when more is required.

Zoo Escape

W hy You Should Play It: Normally, Mario Maker courses having no chill is a bad thing. Here, KidFlik manages to incorporate the idea of chaos with the actual ‘narrative’ of the level. It’s what happens when you accidentally let the animals of the Mushroom Kingdom Zoo escape. Pandemonium! Quick, wild level.

Hail-Fire Peaks

Why You Should Play It: This one is for you Mario purists, ironically enough. Here you will find rock-solid platforming, along with a great mix of fire and ice elements—all without becoming a gimmick.

The Cube: 9 Rooms, 9 Challenges

Why You Should Play It: An intriguing concept, this course turns Mario Maker into a series of interconnected puzzles. For those of you that like head-scratchers.

The Goomba: A Sad Tale of Madness

Why You Should Play It: It’s one of the most WTF levels you’ll find in Mario Maker. Or in anything, period. I think I need some holy water after watching this.

Courses with 0 plays are to the pool for Endless Challenge, but they are incredibly rare.
