A French stitch is a seam within a seam. Create a stitch on a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Trim 1/4 inch from your 1/2 inch seam allowance. Fold and pin your stitch onto itself from the inside out. Create a second 1/4 inch stitch, encasing the first stitch on to itself. Create a tailored edge.
