Mar 02, 2020 · And there’s one made especially for how to tackle the task-based simulation portion of the CPA Exam. You can watch Becker instructor Mike Brown explain the process in this video. A lot of students aren’t familiar with the task-based simulations included in the exam (admittedly, it’s one of the toughest portions of the exam).

It’s true that the content of the CPA Exam can be difficult to master. But it’s also true that learning how to take the CPA Exam is just as important as learning the content.
Task-based simulations are a crucial part of the CPA exam. Coming in armed with strategies to tackle these questions can help you become more comfortable with the requirements, which can save valuable time during the exam.
In our tutorials, a Becker expert instructor leads you through the four types of task-based simulations you’ll encounter—traditional, document review, research and written communication. Along the way, they offer strategies and techniques that can help you work through the simulations as quickly and efficiently as possible.
The key difference between simulations and multiple choice questions is the simulations are testing you on higher order skills of application, analysis, and evaluation.
This portion, which appears only in the Business Environments and Concepts (BEC) section, requires you to prepare a formal business communication , such as a memo or a letter. The tutorial demonstrates how the writing required here may be different from the type of writing you’re accustomed to. The key is to earn all the points available. Fortunately, as you’ll see in the video, the exam explains how this section is evaluated. Depending on the written communication, you may be graded for technical content in addition to general writing skills.
Traditional simulations are broad in scope and can include the following: 1 Preparing a financial statement 2 Preparing adjusting journal entries 3 Modifying audit reports 4 Applying the AICPA’s Code of Professional Conduct to scenarios 5 Calculating the tax basis of assets
The Auditing section doesn’t have a single source of authoritative literature. Your job in here is to figure out which book from the library you need to refer to for the question at hand. In the video, you’ll see where you can choose from a drop-down menu of standards (such as an auditing, ethical or attestation standards) that may apply to the question at hand.
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. –May 6, 2016– Becker Professional Education, a global leader in professional education and a part of DeVry Education Group, today announced the launch of document review simulation (DRS) as part of its CPA Exam Review.
Becker Professional Education, a part of Adtalem Global Education, is a global leader in professional education serving the accounting and healthcare professions. One million professionals have prepared to advance their careers through our CPA Exam Review, CMA Exam Review, USMLE® Review and Continuing Professional Education courses.
But do you know how to download the Becker CPA Exam review so you can study without Wi-Fi? You can download the Becker material to your computer and access it anytime you don’t have internet access. To get started, log into your online user portal when you have internet access. There, you will find a section of downloadable material. Choose the file that is appropriate for your operating system, complete the download, and study anytime.
The Becker method uses pre-assessment quizzes followed by content review, ending with a final cram course. Plus, you can attend live or virtual classes and interact with instructors in other ways. Along the way, Becker’s online platform tracks your performance to make sure you’re headed in the right direction.
Did you know that some of the questions on the CPA Exam change from time to time? In fact, the AICPA slightly alters the content about twice a year. For instance, content changes after new tax laws are enacted, and another time when other accounting standards are updated.
Becker has become popular with CPA candidates because of its high-quality materials and unparalleled student support. Specifically, Becker’s top course includes:
But it’s also true that learning how to take the CPA Exam is just as important as learning the content. Each exam section is 4 hours long, so candidates have to learn how to focus for that length of time. They also need to practice their pacing.
The Becker courses are divided into learning modules. Each module starts with a pre-assessment quiz with 4-8 multiple-choice questions. These short assessments determine your base-level knowledge of that module’s content. So for example, let’s assume your quiz results suggest you still need to master certain areas. As a result, the adaptive learning platform will feed you material based on your weaknesses. In this way, you won’t waste study time on what you already know.
Second, you could post an exam-related question to the Becker forum. You will normally receive a response from a Becker instructor within a day or two.
First, find CPA task-based simulations samples from the AICPA or in your CPA review course. For example, the Wiley CPA TBS count is over 300. If you study with NINJA CPA for task-based simulations, you’ll have access to more than 200 practice TBSs. Or if you go with Becker, you can practice with over 500 simulations. However, the Gleim CPA courses have 1,300 practice simulations, the most available on the market. After you’ve chosen a review course, work through all of your simulations, drilling each type.
Simulations are essentially “condensed case studies” for examiners to evaluate your knowledge in a specific area. These complex problems ask you to apply your conceptual knowledge and skills to real-world applications. In a way, TBSs test your skills at a higher level than the MCQs. For instance, they ask you to apply your knowledge, analyze situations, and evaluate problems before you solve them.
However, different types of CPA Exam TBS testlets appear throughout the exam. In fact, the CPA Exam has six kinds of TBSs. Moreover, some types of TBSs can be combined into one problem. For example, a multi-part simulation could incorporate a numeric entry with an option list.
Simulations typically include greater background information and context to create a more robust, authentic experience for candidates to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Candidates receive a set of questions related to a scenario they would encounter as a newly licensed CPA.
The CPA Exam research simulations can appear in AUD, FAR, and REG. However, you won’t find a research question in BEC. In the research TBSs, you’ll read a problem that can only be solved by referencing the appropriate authoritative literature. Therefore, you must search through a list of authoritative literature and cite the correct source. For example, the Internal Revenue Code could be a source for a tax rate scenario. However, other sources could include the AICPA Professional Standards, the PCAOB Auditing Standards, and others.
Yes—Every part of the CPA Exam, including AUD, BEC, FAR, and REG, includes simulations. And what’s more, task-based simulations (or TBSs or SIMs) make up about 50% of your score and over half of the exam time. Therefore, the other 50% of your score is from MCQs, or multiple-choice questions.
Technically, written communications are task-based simulations, too. Nevertheless, they are a unique kind of question that only appears in BEC. But be warned: they can actually cover any of the CPA Exam content from any section, including AUD, FAR, and REG.
Becker CPA review packages include a 4-part course review, 1,400+ flashcards, 5 one-on-one tutoring sessions and many more features. Some of the most popular offerings, the all-inclusive packages of Pro and Premium are set up to give you everything you need to pass the exam and unlimited access.
Part of your preparation for the CPA Exam also involves understanding the exam requirements by state. Be mindful of the requirements in your state when creating your plan and choosing your CPA study guide.
Another popular Becker tool is the Final Review which includes additional lectures, multiple-choice questions and simulated exam designed to reinforce your knowledge before test day. It condenses the most challenging concepts to help you make the most of your final hours of study time.
One example is LiveOnline classes, which are lectures offered live on the web or in-person for a more personalized learning experience.
It’s important to balance personal time within your studying schedule to avoid burnout, so make sure to account for this in your plan as well.
March 16, 2021. Ryan Bannister, CPA. Financial Analyst. Passing the CPA Exam doesn’t happen by accident. To succeed in one of the hardest professional exams in the world, where the 2020 cumulative pass rates varied between 50-65% per section, half the fight is choosing the proper CPA study guide and studying process.
Then, of course, there’s the nitty gritty cost details. CPA Exam study guides can vary widely in cost. Consideration should be given to the amount of material included, instructor quality, and other key factors. Ensuring the course comes with all the tools you need to succeed is of immense value – the CPA Exam is an investment that’s well worth it, so choose your study guide based on what you think will help you succeed on exam day rather than cost alone.

In terms of scoring, most people get a bump. It seems to range for many in the 5-10 point range higher on the actual test (mine was 8 for FAR)
However, as we all know, the CPA isn't like college. Daily, I am reminded that no matter how much I want to, I physically cannot focus, and then that stress of not being able to study snowballs into anxiety, and then that anxiety prohibits me from being able to focus on studying.
