So while the course menu link may be called something different, the Messages page will be clearly labeled with the name of the tool. This is how you will be able to tell if your instructor is using Blackboard Email or Blackboard Messages. This is the Message Center, where all of your Blackboard Messages will be collected.

Emails about announcements are always sent and aren't controlled by the global notification settings. If you post an announcement and forget to select the email copy check box, you'll need to create a new announcement. If you edit the announcement and select email copy and post it again, the email isn't sent.
The Blackboard notification system alerts you when events occur in your courses, such as when students submit gradable work, post to a discussion board or send you a course message. Notifications are generated automatically whenever their associated events occurs.

Find the email tool for all of your courses through the Tools panel on the My Institution tab. Your instructor can also add a link to the email tool directly to the course menu. From the course menu, select Tools > Send Email.
Course messages. From anywhere in a course, you can access messages on the navigation bar. The course messages page displays all the messages that are specific to the course you are in. You don't need to add a link to course messages. The Messages icon is always part of course navigation in the Ultra Course View.
Read-only course messages for students. Each institution has different communication preferences and policies. Some institutions may want to limit how students communicate with others in their courses. Your institution can choose not to allow students to reply to or create messages in their courses.
You and your students can send messages to each other, multiple people, or an entire class. Messages activity remains inside the system, and you don't have to worry about email addresses that may be incorrect or outdated.
Only the student role has these restrictions. You can't turn this setting on and off in your individual courses. When this setting is turned on, students can only read the messages other roles send, such as instructors and teaching assistants. Students also won't be able to forward messages they receive.
Importing Your Course to Blackboard. To import an exported course to Blackboard, you will need to make sure you have the course exported as a .zip file. Login to the Blackboard Course you wish to import into. Click Packages and Utilities under the Course Management in the left menu. Click Import Package/View Logs.
However, this does not download all submissions for all assignments at once. You will need to repeat the process for each assignment.
Blackboard: Downloading or Archiving Your Course Content. You may wish to download your course content from Blackboard either for your records, to save for accreditation reasons, or if you leave the university. There are several ways you can download your content. See the options below for retaining access to your course materials.
Your instructor may choose to use Blackboard Email as their primary communication tool. The email tool allows you to send messages to other members of your course. You can address e-mail to individuals, to the entire class, to your instructor, or to groups of students. The email tool will send copies to the person's email account.
Your instructor may choose to use Course Messages as their primary communication tool. The this tool provides you with a familiar, email-like environment that you can use for course communication.
Once on the Compose Message page: 1 Click the To button to access the course participant list. 2 Select the recipients and then click the arrow to add them to the message. 3 Add a subject to your message. 4 Type your message. 5 Click Attach a File to browse for files from your computer. In Messages, you can only attach one file per message. In order to send multiple files, you will either have to send multiple messages or send them in a .zip format. 6 Click submit to send your message.
Accessing Blackboard Messages. You can only access the Blackboard Messages tool from within a course. Messages are internal to Blackboard and, at this time, any communications sent through the Messages system cannot be forwarded outside of the Blackboard system. To access the Messages tool and send a message, click the link on the course menu.
