California Nursing CEU Requirements for RNs and LVNs Continuing education (CEU) is required for licensure renewal by the nursing boards in most states, including California.

Requirements for vocational nurse licensure are specified in the Vocational Nursing Practice Act. There are five (5) methods by which one may qualify for the licensure examination. Each method is designed to provide an individual access into the job market as an entry-level practitioner.
1. What is a licensed vocational nurse (LVN)? An entry-level health care provider who is responsible for rendering basic nursing care. A vocational nurse practices under the direction of a physician or registered nurse.

It takes a minimum of 3-4 weeks for the results to be mailed out. Examination results are produced by the NCSBN and sent to the Board for processing. NCSBN does not always send the exam results in the order the exam was administered. Applicants must wait at least 3-4 weeks to obtain their official results.
If the program is in compliance, the Board may grant accreditation for a four-year period. Survey for Continued Accreditation. A Board representative conducts surveys of programs every four years to determine each program's compliance with Article 5 of the applicable Rules and Regulations.
A licensed vocational nurse must be certified by the Board to perform intravenous therapy or blood withdrawal. A licensed psychiatric technician can only be certified in blood withdrawal (not intravenous therapy). A PT must be certified by the Board to perform blood withdrawal.
Licensees are required by law to retain the original copies of their CE Certificates for a period of 4 years and if audited, they must furnish the Board copies of all relevant documents.

The content of all courses of continuing education must be relevant to the practice of nursing. Learning experiences are expected to enhance the knowledge of the registered nurse at a level above that required for licensure. Courses must be related to the scientific knowledge and/or technical skills required for the practice of nursing, or be related to direct and/or indirect patient/client care.
