I just create the route in strava, save it and then use the export button in your routes. You can then choose to download as.tcx or.gpx file. Save this file somewhere on your desktop/laptop and then copy and paste into Newfiles on the garmin unit (attached via usp cable).
I currently have the ability to export routes out of Strava (mine or anyone's) as .gpx files (I got a free premium upgrade for some reason for a month). Anyway, I'd like to drop these routes into my Garmin so i can follow them sometime....

You may want to do this by mapping the route out yourself on the Strava desktop app, or you may decide to choose from one which you've already ridden or that someone else has recommended. You may even decide to follow a pro's route.
The next time you sync your device with the Garmin Connect mobile app or Garmin Express software, any new starred Strava routes will be synced to your Garmin device. Synced routes will appear in your Courses folder on your Garmin.

You can export a route by selecting Export on the route page. Choose to download the TCX or GPX file depending on what your device will accept. GPX files are best if you have base maps installed because they will display both a styled map and text-based directions.
