Pre-Class Work

Please complete each step in the order listed and follow all instructions to prepare for the WSI class.

Step 1: Complete the WSI online course

Prior to the in-class date, all WSI candidates must complete an online Introduction to the Water Safety Instructor course thru the Red Cross Learning Center.

Step 2: Print the Class Forms

Bring the completed registration form and test answer key with you to the first class.

Step 4: Download the Course Manuals

Participants are required to download, print or purchase the two main manuals for the WSI course and bring both manuals to class in either digital format on a laptop, iPad or tablet, or printed hard copy. Additionally, participants must print the Stroke Performance Charts and bring those to class as well.

Print your Certification

Digital certificates can be viewed, printed or shared online and can be accessed anytime through your Red Cross Account. Each certificate includes a unique ID and a QR code which meets employment requirements and allows employers to easily confirm your certificate is valid.

Print your Class Receipt

Note: To customize your class receipt, you will need Adobe Reader and input the fields as they pertain to the course (s) you completed.

What is a water safety instructor?

The Water Safety Instructor certification course trains WSI candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants progress.

Why are aquatic training classes cancelled?

All Aquatic Training classes have been canceled until further notice to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the community. Until pools reopen and physical distancing requirements are lifted it is impossible to conduct Lifeguarding or Water Safety classes.

How much does it cost to transfer a class?

Class Transfers – The class transfer fee is $75 and registered participants are required to submit a Transfer Request online at least 48 hours prior to the original class date. Transfer class must be completed within 60 days of the original class date.

Can you transfer to a class if you are absent from a class?

If a participant is absent from any scheduled class days or times, the participant will not be offered a transfer or refund of any kind.
