Designing your course can be an exciting opportunity to organize and share information and engage with your learners! Consider the following when designing your course in Canvas: 1 Create a central space for students to access course materials (documents, links, activities, assignments, assessments) 2 Support student success by showing them how to get started, where to find due dates, grading information, and relevant tools 3 Make everything accessible for all learners (use formatting such as headers, alternative text for images, caption videos). Course Templates are designed to help you set up your course by following best practices. Click on each of the templates below to look at them. If you'd like to import one of these templates to your Canvas course, go to the Canvas Commons and search keyword: HSU.
One of the main methods to organize/design your course is through Canvas modules or pages. You can use modules, pages, or a combination of both. Using Canvas modules provides the benefits of easy-to-create course set-up, easy-to-navigate for students, and consistent naming. We highly recommend using the Accessible Syllabus Template to ensure that you have all the essential and supportive elements of a strong syllabus. Copy and paste your syllabus content into the template on the Syllabus page in your Canvas course and then add a link to the downloadble version (e.g., PDF). This is important for consistency in navigation for students who will look for the syllabus under the Syllabus link in Canvas.
Short Name: Enter a concise name or abbreviation for the course. This is the name that will appear as the heading on the course activity feed. It will also serve as the first element in the breadcrumb trail at the top of all pages in your course.
By default, manually created courses revert to read-only status for all site members exactly one year after the date of creation. You will receive email reminders approximately 30 days and seven days before the courses you own expire.
Several months before the beginning of each semester, official courses for academic credit at Indiana University are provisioned automatically in Canvas through integration with the university's Student Information System (SIS). Consequently, if you're assigned to teach an official course, your course site in Canvas will be created automatically.
The "Start a New Course" feature is only available if you have the Teacher, Co-Instructor, or Librarian role in at least one Canvas course. If you have a legitimate need to create a course but do not meet this requirement, contact the Support Center.
Students: You courses will appear on your Dashboard when two conditions are met. One, the course has been published by your instructor. Two, the term has started. Your instructor can make the course available early by changing the course dates.
If there are no gold stars then Canvas will display all courses listed within above the Past Enrollments section.
In addition, Canvas includes tools tips to describe certain thing on the screen. Hovering your mouse over the stars will tell you why you can or cannot star a course.
Instructors: Due to frequent requests, Canvas course shells automatically appear on instructor’s dashboards several terms before they begin. Course shells can be hidden from the dashboard as desired using the instructions below.
Only your current courses can be added or removed from your Dashboard. The list of those courses appear above Past Enrollments. Any courses from Past Enrollments and below can not be starred.
