Most faculty who use a parting-way report that the few minutes of new course content they “lose” is more than made up for by the summary over the lifespan of the course or by the good feelings engendered by thanking the class for their hard work and in some way winding down a semester long experience. Participation means that students can submit assignments, post discussions, upload files, or take part in any other action-based task within a course. If you set course participation dates, students can accept the course invitation, access the course, and look at content, but they cannot fully participate until the first day of the course.
