Stage 1 – Planning of Your Backyard RC Track

Before you build, think about the other RC racetracks you have seen or have used. Analyze what you think the builder did best and what he did wrong. Begin with looking at what you think they did right and improve on those features. After that, start working to change their faulty designs.

Stage 2 – Preparation and construction

When designing and building your track, make sure you plan for proper drainage. This protects you from flooding and expensive repairs to your project.

Stage 3 – Perfect you lanes

When it comes to making your track perfect, we suggest that you use a lot of water and do a lot of raking. Not only does this smooth out the track, it binds the dirt together giving you a firmer racetrack to race your RC cars. We also suggest you let the water soak in first before you start raking.

Step 1: Prepare the Site

Hopefully you have a nice flat spot with no weeds, rocks and trees in the way. I started with the picture above and it took a while to clear out. Fortunately I had cleared most of it for anther project (Backyard roller coaster) but that didn't work out.

Step 2: Lay It Out and Build It Up

Roughly lay out your drainage pipe and 4x4's in the corners. Stake down the pipe and wood as you go. I recommend at least a foot of rebar for each stake. Also depending on the car size and how many cars you want to race. I would recommend at least 5 feet width on your track. This seemed like a good size for 1/16 scale and a few cars racing.

Step 3: Details and Racing

Every race track needs a name and sign. You can make one with coroboard, pvc and a sharpie. Simply print out your text on paper. Cut out and trace it onto your sign. Then fill in with sharpie. Attach the sign to some Pvc with zip ties. It may not last through a hurricane, but it adds a nice touch.
