Section 89-G of Article 7A requires all persons engaged in security guard activities be registered with the New York Department of State (DOS), and complete all training (unless exempt) at schools approved by the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). The 8 hour annual in service training course for security guards must be completed within 12 calendar months from completion of the 16 Hour On-the-Job Training Course, and annually thereafter.
All security guards are required to complete an 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course prior to applying to the Department of State for a Security Guard Registration Card. That course must be followed by a 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards within 90 days of initial employment as a security guard.
Security guard applicants must have background checks carried out by the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and the FBI. The DCJS processing fee is currently $75.00; the FBI fee, $14.75. Both fees are paid to MorphoTrust.

Education and Training Most clubs require that bouncers have a high school diploma or the equivalent. A person in this role will also be required to pass a background check and random drug tests. Specialized bouncer training or licensing is likely unnecessary unless the bouncer is required to carry a weapon.
