June 17, 2021: ISO has received a lot of inquiries about students filing F-1 OPT or F-1 STEM OPT applications online on the USCIS website. F-1 students can only qualify for the STEM OPT extension if their employer is signing the Form I-983 as the employer needs to attest this form for the F-1 students. The employer that signs the Training Plan of the F-1 student must be the same entity that employs the student and providing the practical training experience to him.
You will be able to continue employment while the extension application is pending with USCIS, until it is approved or denied, or for 180 days, whichever comes first. You should continue reporting your employment information to OIA during your OPT STEM extension.
