To set a course nickname:
Where does the course nickname show up in Canvas? Course nicknames show up in the Dashboard, course navigation menu, course breadcrumbs, and notification emails. Does creating a nickname change the actual course name in the system?
First, go to Dashboard in the left navigation. If you currently have your Dashboard set to display in list view, switch to icon view by toggling the switch to the left. Pick a course to create a nickname for, and then click on the settings icon for that course.
Go to Dashboard in the left navigation. Then click on the settings icon for the course. Clear the nickname text field and the original course name will show up. Then click Apply.

Note! Although students see the same card image because it is a course setting, they do not see instructor course nicknames and colors, which are user specific.

To put it simply, the “lock” icon means that Canvas won't give you the option to calculate your overall grade. If you'd like to do so, you'll need to use sources like Roger Hub to calculate grades, or you can do it manually but the former is more convenient to use.
