If your instructor uses Top Hat, the Iowa State University Book Store will add it to your required course materials list. You will need to purchase a Top Hat license from the Iowa State University Book Store or through the Top Hat website before you will be able to access the Top Hat course materials.

To create a course, click the Create Course button in the upper-right corner of the course lobby. In the modal that appears, input the required course information including course title, start date, subject and course code and then click Create. You will be brought to the Content section of your newly created course.
From the Content section of your Top Hat course click the blue Create button in the upper-left corner and select Upload File from the menu that appears. Drag-and-drop the file that you wish to upload into the modal that appears. Alternatively, click the link in the modal to browser your computer for the desired file.

Top Hat Attendance provides a 'geolocation' feature to prevent students from responding to attendance outside of a physical area. Top Hat questions do not have the geolocation feature so technically you cannot prevent students from responding to questions remotely.
Items assigned in homework mode are graded. Review - Indicated underneath the icon in orange letters when accessing Top Hat from a web browser. This means you have access to the item outside of the classroom and, if applicable, have the ability to see the correct answer (as a means of review).
Completing a Remotely Monitored Test After paying for each required item, students will be able to proceed into the course. *Purchasing the "Remote Proctored Exams (1 Course Access)" item when enrolling in a Top Hat course grants students the ability to take remotely proctored tests in that course only.

When you are in the Top Hat Lobby (this is what you see when you log in to Top Hat), you will see the option to create a course, click Create Course. You can create as many courses as you wish, however, we recommend creating one course per module so that student enrolments are easier for you to manage.

In Canvas, go to Settings (1) and click on the Navigation tab (2). Find Top Hat in the list of Navigation items (1). Click on the three-dots icon and Enable (2). Don't forget to click the Save button (3) at the bottom. Click on Top Hat from your Course Navigation menu.

If you made your course in Top Hat without first changing your account settings to Canvas, or before August 13, 2020 (when all accounts were converted to Canvas), it is likely that the course is set to synchronize with Blackboard.
