5-60 mg/day orally in a single daily dose or divided every 6 to 12 hours.
In diseases that require long-term treatment, prednisone can be given as alternate day therapy (ADT). ADT is safer than every day therapy, and it may continue as long as necessary, depending on your response and development of side effects or complications.
Tell the doctor before having treatment if you: have had a steroid injection in the last few weeks – you usually need to wait at least 6 weeks between injections. you've had 3 steroid injections in the last year – doctors usually recommend no more than 3 injections in the same area in the space of 12 months.
How should this medicine be used? Prednisone comes as a tablet, delayed-release tablet, as a solution (liquid), and as a concentrated solution to take by mouth. Prednisone is usually taken with food one to four times a day or once every other day.
Short-term treatment (7–14 days) with oral prednisone is used for many acute inflammatory and allergic conditions.
Treatment extending longer than three months is considered long term and results in the majority of severe side effects. When steroids are used for short durations of a few days or weeks, they are relatively safe.
It takes approximately 16.5 to 22 hours for Prednisone to be out of your system.
Prednisone is the oral tablet form of steroid most often used. Less than 7.5 mg per day is generally considered a low dose; up to 40 mg daily is a moderate dose; and more than 40-mg daily is a high dose.
Your symptoms may be a return of inflammation, not withdrawal. Tapering too quickly can cause a flare to happen. If your disease flares, you may need to go back to a higher steroid dose for a short time to get the inflammation under control.
Prednisone generally works very quickly — usually within one to four days — if the prescribed dose is adequate to reduce your particular level of inflammation. Some people notice the effects of prednisone hours after taking the first dose.
How long to take it for. This depends on your health problem or condition. You may only need a short course of prednisolone for up to 1 week. You may need to take it for longer, even for many years or the rest of your life.
Official answer. The starting dose of prednisone may be between 5 mg to 60 mg per day. A dose above 40 mg per day may be considered a high dose.
