Royal St George's is probably the most challenging course on offer in the Open rotation. In the 14 Championships at the course, all the winners beside one (Greg Norman in 1993 on -13) have finished with a winning score of five under par or worse.
Laidlaw PurvesWhen Royal St. George's opened in the late 1880s, it embodied the Victorian principles of its designer, Laidlaw Purves.
Visitors are welcome at St George's from Monday to Friday (except Public and Bank Holidays). Saturday and Sunday's are reserved for members. Visitors may play having been introduced by a member, or on production of a letter of introduction from their Club Secretary to [email protected].
As you may expect, membership is difficult to come by with the club being extremely prestigious and private. "Candidates must be proposed and seconded by existing members and then, subject to the memberships', support and the Committees' agreement, are elected as vacancies arise," Royal St George's told Golf Monthly.
CarnoustieIndeed the average winning score at Carnoustie since 1980 is three-under with an average of only 15 players under par per Championship – the total is the toughest of all the Open venues in that time frame. Not far behind Carnoustie on the 'tough-ometer' is Royal Birkdale.
Five bunkersThe hole is called 'Suez Canal' due to the ditch crossing the fairway approximately 330 yards from the Championship tee. You might think Jordan Spieth and co are putting out on something ranging between glass and ice at Royal St George's. The reality is somewhat different. In their Pace of Play manual issued several years ago, the R&A revealed they set a maximum green speed target of 10.5 feet at golf's oldest major.
1887Outside of Scotland, there is no course drenched in as much Open history as Royal St. George's. Founded in 1887 by Dr William Laidlaw Purves to be a rival to St Andrews in the south of England, the links course has hosted the battle for the Claret Jug on 14 occasions.
2011It was last played at Royal St George's in 2011 when Darren Clarke showed his mastery of links golf in challenging weather conditions to hold off Americans Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson to become Champion Golfer of the Year. And the Northern Irishman admits victory was the realisation of a childhood dream.
70Royal St. George's ranks No. 9 on Golfweek's Best list of top courses in Great Britain and Ireland. The course will be set up at 7,189 yards with a par of 70 for this year's Open.
