It achieved its ‘Royal’ status under the patronage of the Prince of Wales in 1895. Royal Portrush consists of two 18-hole courses. The Valley Links is a good test but it’s the Dunluce Links which gives the venue its elite status.
Portrush’s Ryder Cup star, US Open Champion and multiple winner on the European tour, Graeme McDowell learned his game on the Valley links and the course is consistently ranked among the top 40 golf courses in Ireland. The first hole is named after a former Lady President Zara Bolton.

In 1951, Royal Portrush first hosted the Open Championship, the oldest of golf's major championships; it was the first Open not held on the island of Great Britain. The Open returned to Portrush in 2019, and it will host again in 2025.
The Royal Belfast Golf ClubThe Royal Belfast Golf Club is the oldest established club in Ireland. Still in excellent condition, it was founded on November 9, 1881, the birth date of the game of golf in Northern Ireland. The 18-hole course at Le Royal Belfast Golf Club is characterized by a large number of bunkers (61 in total).
Today, it will cost you £220 to play 18 on one of Europe's most esteemed courses — the Dunluce Course, which is hosting The Open. That translates roughly to $274.

architect Harry ColtOn the advice of Sir Anthony Babington, Royal Portrush enlist the services of celebrated golf course architect Harry Colt. Involved in the design of over 300 courses during a prolific career, Colt was charged with creating a championship course to challenge the best in the game.

History. The Royal Portrush Golf Club was founded 134 years ago in 1888 as The County Club. It became The Royal County Club in 1892 under the patronage of the Duke of York and assumed its present name in 1895 under the patronage of the Prince of Wales.

The Dunluce Links has hosted the Open Championship on two occasions in 1951 and 2019. The 2019 Open which saw Irishman Shane Lowry lift the prestigious Claret Jug, was a huge success attracting golf fans from all over the world.

When most people think of links-style golf, they are picturing golf that can be played along the ground with lots of undulation, plenty of dunes and little to no trees. These courses also usually feature pot bunkers as opposed to the larger sprawling American-style bunkers.
Courses. The Open Championship has always been held on a coastal links golf course in Scotland, England or Northern Ireland. The hosting pattern has been: 1860–1870: Prestwick Golf Club the sole host.

As local hero Rory McIlroy fluffed his lines by taking a quadruple-bogey at his opening hole and missing the cut due to a first-round 79, another Irishman, Shane Lowry, sparked scenes of jubilation with a six-shot win over Tommy Fleetwood. Lowry opened with a pair of 67s, kicked clear with a course-record 63 and kept his cool with a closing 72.
Par 4, 421 yards (Hughies): Rory won’t forget this one after his opening tee shot went left of the internal out-of-bounds. The approach is played to an elevated two-tier green with plenty of undulations. An opening hole which gives an immediate sense of setting out on a special 18-hole journey.

Shirts. Golf shirts must have collars, with either long or short sleeves. Rugby/football shirts are prohibited, as are any shirts carrying slogans, numbers or illustrations on apparel that are not golf-related. Collarless shirts, such as t-shirts of any variety, are not allowed.

Tee-times can be booked in advance on-line for both courses. You will receive an automatic confirmation of your booking and payment on completion of your booking. Tee-times can also be booked by telephone and e-mail, subject to written confirmation and receipt of full payment. Tour Operators and larger groups should book via phone or e-mail.
Caps are not permitted to be worn in the Clubhouse by either ladies or gentlemen. These rules apply to all golfers, as well as caddies and visitors accompanying golfers. Persons not properly dressed will be denied access to the Clubhouse. The Dress Code will be strictly enforced at all times.
Golfers are NOT permitted to wear training shoes on the Links. Golf shoes and training shoes ARE permitted in the Clubhouse, excluding Dining Room & Babington Room. Sandals, of any type, are NOT permitted on the Links. Any sandals/shoes worn in the Clubhouse, must be worn with socks (this applies to gentlemen only).
