Minors, 12 to 17 years of age, have separate rules to follow ( learn more ). While minors are not mandated to complete Basic Hunter Education to hunt, it is one option for minors (15-17 years of age) to purchase hunting license and it is a prerequisite for all minors (12-17 years of age) to participate in some youth programs such as the youth turkey hunt program and the young adult pheasant hunt program.
By state law, all first-time hunters (18 years of age or older) must successfully complete a Basic Hunter Education course before they may purchase a Massachusetts hunting or sporting license. Government issued “certificates of completion” from any jurisdiction are accepted.
Basic Hunter Education courses. Basic Hunter Education is mandatory for all first time hunters. In response to demand, MassWildlife is adding more hunter education courses throughout the summer.
Allows hunters age 17 or older to defer completion of hunter education for up to a year, as long as the person is accompanied* by a hunter who has: 1) completed hunter education, or 2) is exempt from the requirement (born before September 2, 1971).
A Deferral may only be obtained once and is only valid until the end of the license year purchased. Our Hunter Education Program provides a foundation in hunting safety and ethics. It instills responsibility, improves skills and knowledge, and encourages interaction between beginner and veteran hunters.
After successfully completing the skills session and passing a 35-question, multiple-choice final with a score of 80 percent or better, you will receive a temporary certificate so you can purchase a permit and hunt immediately.
Missouri residents 16 years of age and older can complete the entire program online.
Experienced hunters are encouraged to volunteer as instructors for our Hunter Education courses.
NOTE: If you can prove you completed an approved hunter education course in another state, you are not required to take Missouri’s Hunter Education Course.

Every U.S. state that demands a Hunter Education Certificate accepts the West Virginia Hunter Education Certificate. As well, West Virginia will accept Hunter Education Certificates from other states that conform to IHEA requirements.
The department recommends that students of the online coursework be age 16 or older.
Hunter education is a mandatory program that is designed to introduce students to several life-long skills that are important to the many different types of outdoor recreational opportunities.

Notice: You must be 21 years of age or older and an Iowa resident in order to complete this course. Iowa's only approved dual hunter education and handgun safety course that meets the training requirements per Iowa law to apply for a nonprofessional permit to carry firearms.

The minimum number of hours to complete the class is 10. Typically there is no charge for the course, unless lunch is furnished or room rental is required. Iowa recognizes hunter education certificates issued by another state and some foreign nations.
The Traditional Hunter Education Course consists of a minimum of ten hours of classroom, homework, and field instruction in the following areas: firearms safety and handling, sportsmanship and ethics, wildlife management and conservation, archery, black powder, wildlife identification, game care, first aid, and survival.
In an effort to raise safety and conservation awareness, California’s first hunter education law was enacted in 1954.
The Online Course and Follow-up class is designed for students 12 years and older.
Parents or guardians are encouraged to attend with young students, especially those younger than age 16, to help define new words or provide additional mentoring during and after class.
The online course, alone, is NOT a qualification for a hunter education certificate. Once you have completed an online course, you will still need to attend a 4-hour follow up class with a certified Hunter Education Instructor.
